embroidery, bands or cire ribbon, er it may be more daring and take the form of panels or a mixture that is frankly ball blue and half red. Bright vermillion red is seen, and various shades ranging from the beautiful shade of Chinese lacquered red to cerise, cardinal and the scarlet of the hunting field. In fact, early, signs look as though red is going to take the place of the jade and Veronese greens that have usurped the favour of popular opinion for so long.

The leaning towards Eastern embroide.) ries has, no doubt, brought this about to some extent; also the favour bestowed on designs and colour schemes "which have come to us by way of the Balkan States In all of these, red figures to such a degree that the idea of utilising it more abundantly has "probably sug gested itself to creative minds in the dress-making world of Paris. Using it as a discreet method of trimming is un- doubtedly only a means of accustoming their clients to a more lavah and whole- sale display, a display that will bring in its wake whole dresses and coats of red.. At present, when used with intelligence and taste, red may be made. the most effective of trimmings and provide a de- lightful note of relief to dark frocks. As well as being combined extensively with navy blue models, some designers are creating the plainest of black satin evening gowns and adding a cluster of red flowers or a single red rose at the waist or shouder.

Another note that is steadily creeping' into modern fashions is the pinafore frock. This is worn by very alim"girls, or by women of what the French call a certain age."-providing they have a sufficient amount of grace to carry it of. It is a straight frock of "chemise"
