To-day being the birthday of her gra- clous Majesty Queen Mary leads (writes F. J. Melville in The Daily Tele graph of May 25th), to devote my notes this week to the association of ladies with our pastime of philately, or stamp collecting. Stamps owe a great deal of their interest and charms to women, and it is worthy of remark that the parent. stamps of the stamp album, the original 1d. black and 2d. blue issued by Great Britain in 1810, set an example in grace- ful stamp portraiture which, although it Mr H. Her Majesty Queen Mary has been portrayed on several stamps, chicly of our North American Dominions. At the time of the Diamond Jubilee Newfound land issued a series of portrait-stamps of our Royal family, to which were added in 1899 the 3 cents orange, portraying Queen Alexandra, and in 1901 the 4 cents violet, giving a beautiful portrait of Queen Mary as Princess of Wales.
