A GOLF FALLACY, THE OVERLAPPING GRIP.

Mach has been written for and against the overlapping grip, bat a correspond. ent writing to, the Times puts the case against it briefly, and in a manner which hardly admits of argument.

He says, The overlapping grip, it may be said, was introduced by Harry Vardon and Joba Henry Taylor, although I have heard that Mr. John E. Laidlay always played with it. I have never asked him if this is so, but my recollec tions of him in his days of prowess are that he did not, except perhaps for short mashie shots.

Harry Vardonand Taylor revolutionised golf, inasmuch as they discarded the orthodox "St. Andrew's swing' and. adopted what is now described as the paneh. and. because they happened to fancy this particular grip, golfersus a body, rushed to adopt it, fondly im agining that by so doing they would be come a Vurilon, Taylor, or Braid.. ! should estimate the loss of control by the use of this grip over the palm grip as not less than 30 per cent., this being especially the ease in iron play, where absolute control is essential. I am, ny self possessed of an average hand and wrist; and have for a number of years more than coquetted with this grip. with the object of convincing my if either of its merits or demerits: and I am bound La admit that I have failed to fud anything in its favour and am fur ther convinced that few amateurs have the power to use it, except to the detri- went of theit game. I have found this grip to particularly fail in iron play, where more power and more control is

1 think necessary than with wood.

mar describe the iron shot as a punch of the wrist and forearm. To accomp- fish this successfully, a considerable aniqmit. of reserve power is a necessity. The bulk of players, using this grip, have to reserve power; in fret. for u long shot many are short of it, that is if the shon is to be correctly played As a conséquence, they instinctively troduce the body to supply the power which they lack, with results which are well-known to every golfer.

-

Now, to sum up. What has this grip For after hit this is the crus of the produced in the line of amateur golfers. situations are they better or worse than those of 20 years ago? I do not think I shall be contradicted if I ussert that chy are worse. Have we a John Rau. a Freddy Tait, a Harold Hilton, a Johanie Laidlay, or a Horace. Hutchin- son, the latter in his earlier days. n great exponent of the game and most attractive to watch? All or any of these players could at all times be relied upon to give a good" account of himself' in any company, being constantly well up. in the Open Championship.

SEX DETERMINATION.

A paper on sex determination was rend, the "Royal Institute recently, by Pro- fessor W. Bateson, who said that one uf the chief advances of recent genrtical re search related to the determination "of sex, the nature of which was now fairly clear. By breeding experiments, ducted on Mendelian lines, it had now been proved that sex was determined by one or other of the two cells which unit- ed in fertilisation. The heredity of sex was not essentially distinct from that of colour or any attribute. In the ease of birds arid moths; the eggs were of two kinds, destined to produce either fo males or males. RED HERRINGS sex depended on the dif férentiation of male; cell: Sometimes it was possible to distinguish the cells with these different potentialities miserosco- pically, but "commonly the proof was ob tained by tracing the descent of Rome ehareteristic linked up with sex. After fertilisation the actual sex could not usually be controlled. Twins, arising by the division of the fertilised egg. were the same sex. Recent work. had shown that in some animals the Secondary sexual course could be modi fied in various ways. In cattle the pre sence of a male twin together with a female could so alter the female 'that it became sterile, being known to farmers as a freemartin." By various methods, of interfctence, such as hybridisation, changes of temperature, etc., striking alteration, in the proportions of sexes could be brought about in special cases; but there was no reason as yet, to sup: ; pose that any interference of this sortTUESDAYS :—— was practicable in regard to man, of the domesticated animals.
