'gen. For many years the shipping business
between Australia and Java and Singa Capt.pore has been served by well-established lines, such at the Burns-Philp and the Royal Dutch Packet, but recently, how- ever, the Commonwealth Government Lino of Steamers has decided to claim a sharo in this particular trade and the mantis- factory business it has secured so far has encouraged the Government to improve the service already inaugurated, and to place additional steamers on the run. It was recently announced that the new steamer Emita, now in Melbourne avait- ing commission, would be placed in this service in addition to the Dromano,
The N.Y.K. 6. Tatsuno Maru (Bon-Dundula, aud Dilgo. In addition to calls Bay line) left Kobe for Hongkong id at Sourabaya, Samarang and. Batavia, Moji on June 3rd, and is expected here the Dromana will call at Macassar, and on June 10th.
The N.Y.E... Mishima Máru (Euro- pean line) left London for Hongkong via Suez on May 8th, and in expected here
On July 6th.
The .a. Lycaon (Blue Funnel line) left Buez on the 27th ult, for Hongkong, and is dus here on the 19th inst.
The 8.s. Burgades (Blue Funnel line) heft Shanghai on the 3rd inst. for Genoa, Marseilles and Liverpool vid Hongkong, She is due here on the 6th inst, and will sail on the 7th inst., at 4 p.m.

It is interesting to note that the Swakopmund, originally one of the Ger man Woermang Line, running between Hamburg and South African ports, has been secured by the E. & A. Line, and will be placed in that Line's service to the East in the near future. She is a vessel of 6,831 tons gross, and in addition to being fine cargo carrier, has excellent passenger accommodation. She was used he a troop transport during the war-
