NEW SPECIES OF MANKIND MENACE OF AN OBSCURE DISEASE
N
An obscure ami alanning diseaseskero- megaly, which may be freely rendered as avergrowth "--was referred to for illustrative purposes in n. lecture on the
Hormone Mechanism" given at the Royal Institution, recently, by Professor Keith.
Abnormal development of the features, bands, and, feet is the characteristic of the disorder, said the lecturer. The new acromegalia face is a rough, enlarged enricature of the old.
4
A small gland the pituitary glàud- attached to the brain governs this growth by throwing hormones into the tissues of the various parts, aud's causing them to grow.
IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.
One might well call the subjects of the disenan new species of mankind.
Adaptation to various special uses was regulated by the hormone mechanism in the sanjo way. The discovery of this mechanism was by far the most important advance, for the student of human evolu tton, made since the death of Darwin.
Darwinians said Professor Keith in conclusion, might be assured, as inference from recent discoveries in this direction, that the greatest Englishman of the nine- teenth century had set them in the right path towards the truth concerning the origin of mas,

WOMEN IN POLITICS.
PRUSSIA'S EXPERIENCE.
Estimates of the signifieuner of the Prussian, elections must take account of the new factor, which has substantially modified the old standards of comparison. That is female suffrage Unfortunately. it is not a statutory prescription that wonch and men should use pirate ballot urns, but it has been done in some com stituencies, and the restrita obtained have berg very interesting. In every such cas that has come unile my notice since the. beginning of the revolution (says the Daily Telegraph's "Berlin edrrespondent), the women's vote has helped to strengthen reaction. The same phenomenon is seen in the first reported instance of divided voting in the Prussian elections. This was at Hagen, in Westphalia. In round figures the voting was as follows:-
Monarchists....
People's Party
Centre
Democrats
Sen. Boea. 1,600 1,000 3,100... 1,000 3.000 3.900 3,300...... 2.00
Majority Socialists... 2,500 ...... 1,800
ladep. Socialiste
Communists
3,800 2,600
3,000 1,500
It is a curious fact that now that wo men have got the vote they should be most enger to give it to those parties which opposed their admission to the franchise.
SWEET SLEEP.
USE OF SUGAR IN THE NEW-
ANÆSTHESIA.
Contin
A remarkable discovery by ental surgeon of a relationship between sugar and anesthotics hus aroused much interest in medical circles,
||
He had observed that diabetics were readily anesthetised, and experiments wern carried out which proved that, after an injection of sugar, given about ten hours before an operation, patients cathe round remarkably, quickly, and usually without any rickness,
The doctor believes that much less anesthetic than usual is needed by a patient who has been injected with sugar. He is still experimenting, and if the theory proves correct sogar injections will be of great importance in anasthesia. There is no interference with the healing of the wound.
PLAIN EVENING DRESS AT THE LEYEE.
The King held the first Levée of the season at St. James's Palace. The scene was hardly distinguishable from thu Levies of pre-war days, we for a sparso sprinkling of khaki uniforms and the alate-blue of the Royal Air Force-Other? wise the dominant note was the scarlet of the revival Army review order."! Bert off by the simpler navy-blue of the senior Service, the black of chaplains and King's Counsel, and a relatively small. number of civilian Court suits, mostly of the modified black-velvet pattern intro- duced some ten years ago, with Here and there one or two wearers of the plainest form of all, now authorized for the first time ordinary wening dress with broochies and silk stockings, innocent of buckles, cut stod buttons, sword sad cocked hate As usual, the white cock's plames surmounting the helmets of the Gentlemen-at-Arma" towered above the carpet of baro heads.
FULLY CHORAL.
An un after the war story the follow- ing is told by Mr. Arnold Bennett in Things That Bave Interested ·Me " ;- The other day. I met a British officer who had been wounded nine times, cap- tured by the Germans while in a state of unconsciousness, and in England re- ported killed. He seemed to be perfectly cheerful. But one matter had aroused his resentment. It was not that as a prisoner he had received only six parcels out of 33 dispatched by his friends It was not that on returning to life, and England he had had to pay for the nd- vertisements of his own decease in the Timex and the later advertisements, con- tradicting the same It was that his solicitor had forwarded to him, among other buls, a bill thus conceived: *** To Jaemorial Service (fully choral), thre guinhas
