SCOTTISH LETTER. CLYDE SHIPYARD SHUT DOWN.
THE FOLLY OF CA' CANNY.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
EDINBURGH, January 20th. A significant indication of the serious position of the shipbuilding industry in the decision of the Lloyd Royal Belgu (Great Britain) Ltd., to close down their yard at Whiteinch on the Clydo, and to cancel orders for four large passenger and cargo steamers under construction at Dumbarton and Greenock. The renang, given is that, the firm, which acquired the yard on the Clyde for the purpose of building their own ships, can to-day purs chase vessels more cheaply than they can build them. few months back his third, "Aurelia," was reviewed. He has not yet got out of tha imitative stage, as was shown by his too obviously Shakespearian sonnets in that book, but the undoubted merit of his "Four Idylls" was commented on at the time. In the light of his tentative per-· formance, there is a certain humour in his statement to an interviewer that he bas been seat for by the Japaness Gov- eramant, not as "A nan of, purely scholastic attainments," but "as a crea- tor." BURNS FESTIVALS.
Mr.
An interesting change from the purely national character of the birthday festival in London was unde by the Robert Burns Club, which differs from others of its kind by admitting English, Irish, and Welsh admirers of the poet Edmund Gorse, the distinguished littera teur. and Lord Riddell proposed the chief toasts. A Scots lady, Annie S. Swan, was also among the speakers, and another notable but more familiar figure was Sir Harry Lauder.
