CAN PROBLEM IN PRICES.

In many cases reta I pricen show as yet no sign of reflecting a considerable drop in the cost of raw materials. Where, for instance, is the reduction in the price of soap or margarine that will compare with the drop in, the cost of ground nuts and palm kernels1"]

In some far Polynesian isle The native with contented smilà Dwells in his quonk (or native hut) And cultivates the Oojah nut The Dojah nut has always been Employed in making Sebalene, But now-a-days it has a share In every household's daily flare. And s'ta transformed to finest Plup Beside each British breakfast, cup.

One morning when the white exploiter Had drifted round to reconnoitre, The native's customary amile Concealed a modicum of guile. He spoke of foods and broken fences, Of failing, crops and-high expenses, And, having thus prepared the land, At last declared his cunning hand: "You take," he said, my rints away, But look how rottenly you pay-- Five cowrie shells for every ton.

I must have six." The deal was done.

By time of day it wanted then Some minutes to the hour of ten And up the agent's prices went Exactly seventy-five per cent. By ten his principal had stuck Another fifty on for lack:

The shipper at the port of Bhong By ten-ifteen was going strong, And cabled his increase of rates For every kind of Oojak freights; By half-past ten the news was hurled To every corner of the world: Ten-forty saw, that news derange The calm of every Stock Exchange. For scarcely had it gained adoption When up went every Oojah option; The manufacturer had stuck His price up ere eleven, truck, And every grocer of the nation Was. wired or 'phoned the new - quota-

tion;

And they, of course, on this advice At once increased the retail price- To clear themselves, what could they do

But multiply the rise by two! Thus noon of that eventful day

Had heard the youngest grocer say. "Beg pardon, mum-the price of Plup

Is three and bvepence-ha'penny up?"

All this was many moons ago

And consular statistics show

That there have since been frequent

cuts

In cowrie rates for Dojah nuts. While native pere was still alive

The rate had dropped again to five. And now the. Oojab trade is run By his contented elder son, Who wears an even larger.smile And keeps ten wires in slap-up style, And only asks three cowrie shella For every ton of nuts he sells.

This, as I said, was long ago, But news of it is rather slow, And no one here as yet has seen

A marked decline in Sebalene. And still the price per pound of Plan. Is three and ävenencë-ka'penny up.

||

It seems to me uncommon queer The contrast indicated here- When Oojah nuts went up in price Plup promptly followed in a trice; When Oojah nuts regain the floor Pulp stays exactly as before..

Oh, would that I could now enlist The aid of some economist

To tell me why this strange connection Should work so fast in one direction But. slower than the slowest hearse, Decline to function, in reverse1 -

CECIDING FACTORS IN THE CHOICE OF A MOTORCYCLE. Other people's opinions."

A "GREAT CONCERT" IN JAPAN || What"

A JAPANESE REPORT.

A brilliant young violinist, Mr. Mischa Elminn, has been giving concerts in Japan. The Japan Chronicle prints the following uncensored translation from a report of one of the concerts appearing in the Usuka Mainichi p

Great concert supervised by Mainichi Shinbun was held at Chuokokaido, Osaka fast night, in most magnificient scene aa first part of Mr. Elman's performance in Osaka. Many finely dressed Japanese high class people and foreigners filled the hall. At exactly seven, great violinist who worn a fine dresscont was appeared on stage, very beaut fully decolated with the dark green curtain, amid the loud cheers-like as storm. When Mr. Lessor, pianist, sat in front of piano, Elman's fingers has began to move softly on a key-board a bow run fluently on the strings at the same time loud stopped. First section of program famous music * Vivaldy,” started thus. The audience were forgotten themselves with a fas cinating tune flowing out from his God- like skilful art. After several of £iner performances, all of which have fully satisfied the people, programs were finished

...

Mr. D. Miniarl-relates, after hearing of this music, that Mr. Elman is certainly a genius of violin and really one of the greatest violinist in the world as one might have expected, and he seems to have specially good hand for such a emo- tional music. Also young pianetis Found & very excellent one as he did without any hindering of sound of violin, though any pianist feel much of difficulty on this. The only thing what I felt a sorry, not myself but perhaps for a per- formers, is that the piano was not no good one and insufficiently made roof. apt to leak the fluent sound. www.

By the way, on the second concert, to-night-program-shall be entirely. changed there expects young lady Motoko of High priest Rochoshi, imperial family, to attend.

Mr. S. Okuni, engraver, who was one of the audience at that night, is going to make up a half-length statue as" a commemoration and wish to give it to M-Elman

Then came a BS.A. I did not know that a single-cylinder could develop so much power. Whers the average mingle is get- ting a tride feverish on its bottom gear, the hefty B.S.A. is stil singging calmly away on second. I never unearthed a gradient which could bring her down to first, which I need solely for starting purposes or where the surface put wach wind up me that I wanted to climb dend slow. And talk about substantial! The B.S.A. is built like a tank, and is fundamently incapable of fracturing anything, whilst she creates the pleasant impres sion that nothing will ever wear out. She struck. me as the utilitarian machine par cellence the rary Las for the hard rider, who goes a long way in any weather, and isn't sure whether he will ever be in a position to buy another machine."
