RIBBED TRONS
Few games have produced more inven- | tions-perhaps it would be more nccurate to call them experiments-than golf, and the purpose of each has been to make the play easier. It is truly too difficult for most of us. That is even the opinion ol J. H. Taylor. Some time ago I was discussing with him the wisdom of decid- ing the championship on an inland course, and he made this remark: "Never, even on an inland Inks, have I found the game easy. Indeed, what- ever the conditions, golf is always a con- founded worry."
Devices for simplifying the game are never ending, but most of them have a very short life. Some time ago an inven- tion was brought to me that was going
to pure all the illa to which the golfer is heir. Its purpose was to compel the player to keep his eye on the ball. There was surely a fortune in such an inven- tion. So far as I know it has not, how- aver.. been put on the market, for, un- fortunately, it was such a simple affair that anyone could make it. But I think that the Idea was very sound.
It consisted of a vulcanite mouthpiece, to which was attached an elastic band This band was to be fastened round one of the rattons on the player's waistcoat, and thus the head was held in a sort of vice. I experimented with the thing, and found that it had a very remarkable effect. Even without any tension being put on the elastic it felt as if it were quite impossible to move the heat, at any rate out of a vertical line..
- RIBBED CLUBS.
JA
Now the Americans with one accord have fallen to the ribbed izon club. Is this to be a passing craze or are these clubs to remain, as some think they are sure to do? One has been led to believe that the ribbed idea is an American creation, but I have one of these clubs in my locker at the present time, and it was bought a few years before the war. Lines are scored across the face, and it was pointed out that these would help to put stop on the ball. They undoubted ly did, but not to any great extent, and the club had no particular appeal: For I found that the club would impart back. snin for one shot and not for another. This was probably because it was in in- expert hands. At any rate; I soon dis carded it, and it is now rusty and friend- leas.
Evidently the new, American club is a development of my old one, inasmuch as the ribs are cut much deeper and are closer together. And I believe that this is the reason why it imparts so much stop or under-spiu. Moreover, I imagine that the effect would be a great deal less it the ribs were not left with sharp edges, which are bound" to damage the ball with every stroke. These new cluba, which I nm told are now to" be found in every American professional's shop, and in a short time will be just as common in this country, at any rate until their utility has been proved in one way or another, have finely cut edges, and, as one can believe, they very quickly knook a ball out of use. LAW AND THE NEW CLUBA.
The chief point to be decided is whe- ther the ribbed club will stop the ball, however it be struck. If it does this. then probably a good many players will put up with the wastage of balls in order to enjoy the fruits of success. On the other hand, if it demands just the same skill to manipulate it as the plain and smooth-face club, a short life can be pre- dicted for this latest American fashion in this country. Certainly the lending professionals do not require any artificial aid in order to stop the ball, and while they will be ready enough to push its sale in their shops, it is unlikely that you will find it in their own bags, except, perhaps, for show purposes.
The legality of the club has been raised, but it is extremely unlikely that St. Andrews will take any action. Cer- tainly to do so before the championship at Hoylake would be most indiscreet, for we should he sure to have the Schenec tady trouble over again. As it is, Ame- ricans who visit us always feel a griev ance that they are not allowed to use a putter which is officially sanctioned at home. Further. America has come to the conclusion that British honours can be won this season for the playing for, and to ban their ribbed irons would simply. provide an excuse for them in the event
of defeat.
GARDEN OF EDEN ·A· ·MYTH.
DEAN INGE CALLS IT A " MYSTERY PLAY "
"The time has now come when we must give up the idea of the ancient paráble of the Garden of Etten and the Fall of Man as a chapter of actual history."
This was one of the conclusions of Dean Inge, in an address to a large audience at the Kingsway Hall recently. His sub- ject was "Sin and Modern Thought."
The narrative of the Fall," he said, "will always be valuable as a kind of mystery play of the psychology of man.” The Dean, for ance, was by no means pessimistic. Here are Bone of bin points
The modern idea is What is a man good for 1" and not 'What is he lid for T
"Threats from the pulpit are no longer in use in the Church of England.
Modern thought tends to suppress sin. What has decayed among us is the sense of sin.
I do not think it is fair to say that in earlier centuries the difference between good and bad was recognised and that now it has been lost. It would be more true to say that, disproportionate punish- ments were then so familiar that they shocked no one; whereas now they seem to us unworthy of God and incredible in a universe, governed by God.
