Fairies are real. They do exist actually, and what is more, have been photographed, So asserts Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a' remarkable' article in the Strand Magorins

The fairy photographs are reprodiced. Thay were taken, three year ago, near. a Yorkshire village by two girls, Iris Car penter, then aged sixteen, and her cousin, Alice, a child of ten.

One of the photographs shows Alice bo hind a badgesidu bank," and before" her, among the flowers and the bracken, aro four danging fairy figures, They are tho traditional fairies of fancy and the story book-long-haired, goszafer robed, with butterfly wings all complete, just as illus trators have always painted them. One fairy is playing on a two-reed pipe. An- other pivots upon a toadstool.

Soveral expert professional photograph. ers have been shown the original negatives of the fairy photographs, and have satisfied themselves, Sir Arthur declares, that the plates were not faked.

Mr. E. L. Gardner, of 5, Craven-road, Harlesden, "a member of the Theosophical Society, has carried on a complete in- vestigation into the circumstances in which the photographs were obtained, and he is convinced of their genuineness.

[ Since the article was written,” said Mr. Gardaer to a Daily Express repre sentative, we have carried the matter for- they, and have secured other and still more wonderful photographs of fairies.

These second series of photographs were taken by the two girls, a few weeks ago under absolute test conditions. "

The photographs can only be obtained by the girls themselves working together. Even for them the photographing is a very delicate matter. Nobody else can take the fairies. Curiously enough, the girls seem to think there is nothing extraordianty about their fairy photographs. They re gard the whole thing as a matter of coures, for they say they have known and seen the fairies all' their" lives."?".

As regards air company service full liberty is given to administrations run- ning air lines to stipulate their own rate. The exceedingly low rate for printed mat- ter for the blind id. per lh was voted. The dispatch by letter of opium, cocaine, and other drugs is prohibited. These may only be forwarded by parcel post.

The next Postal Congress will be held at Stockholm in 1924. The congress has examined upwards of 3,000 proposals, many of which had to be rejected. Only the eccondary convention regarding parool post and money orders, to which Great Britain is not a party, remains to be con cluded.

There were there, he said, vast tracts of country suitable for cultivation await- -ing a regular water supply, and he aug- gested the cutting off of rivere running into the Zambesi and turning them south, and the formation of a lake cover- ing about 20,000 square miles as a reser voir for flood water north-west of the Kalahari conntry The question was whether, owing to evaporation being in excess of rainfall, the lake would die appear. One effect, he thought, would be that when the wind blew inland the atmosphere, being humid, would allow precipitation, so that the rains would fall in due season with fair average intensity, instead of in cloud-bursts following drought.
