--PHOTOGRAPHS OF FAIRIES
TAKEN BY TWO CHILDREN.
"EXPERTS" VIEWS.
Fairies are real. They do exist actually, and what is more, have been photographed, So asserts Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a' remarkable' article in the Strand Magorins
The fairy photographs are reprodiced. Thay were taken, three year ago, near. a Yorkshire village by two girls, Iris Car penter, then aged sixteen, and her cousin, Alice, a child of ten.
One of the photographs shows Alice bo hind a badgesidu bank," and before" her, among the flowers and the bracken, aro four danging fairy figures, They are tho traditional fairies of fancy and the story book-long-haired, goszafer robed, with butterfly wings all complete, just as illus trators have always painted them. One fairy is playing on a two-reed pipe. An- other pivots upon a toadstool.
The second photograph shows a dancing gnome prancing around the knees of Iris He also is true to type, with puckered, whimsical face, moth wings, and spiker" fect.
FALSE OR TRUE?
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in his article says The pictures stand or full together.|.. Both are false or both are true. · All the circumstances point to the latter alterna- tive"
Soveral expert professional photograph. ers have been shown the original negatives of the fairy photographs, and have satisfied themselves, Sir Arthur declares, that the plates were not faked.
Mr. E. L. Gardner, of 5, Craven-road, Harlesden, "a member of the Theosophical Society, has carried on a complete in- vestigation into the circumstances in which the photographs were obtained, and he is convinced of their genuineness.
[ Since the article was written,” said Mr. Gardaer to a Daily Express repre sentative, we have carried the matter for- they, and have secured other and still more wonderful photographs of fairies.
These second series of photographs were taken by the two girls, a few weeks ago under absolute test conditions. "
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and 1. pre bringing out a book shortly on the subject of fairy photographs. We shall then sub- mit the full evidence to the public.
The photographs can only be obtained by the girls themselves working together. Even for them the photographing is a very delicate matter. Nobody else can take the fairies. Curiously enough, the girls seem to think there is nothing extraordianty about their fairy photographs. They re gard the whole thing as a matter of coures, for they say they have known and seen the fairies all' their" lives."?".

MADRID November 24th The principal draft Convention has been approved by the Universal Postal Congress sitting here, but has not yet been signed. The Convention admits the principle of an increase of postage rates, while not making it obligatory. Every cuntry of the Postal Union muy fix or modify its own rates between the minimum, which is the rate in facce on October 1st, 1920, and the maximum," which for letters is fixed. at 50 centimes gold [5d.]
The weight for letters remains as before, that is, 20 grammes, which may be in- creased optionally to 28 grammes, which The is equivalent to one ounce English. maximam for postcards is fixed at 30 cen- times gold. The principle of the standard colours for 2d, ljd,, and id, stamps ia maintained for the equivalent for the new rate establisheil. The maximum for print- ed matter is 10 centimes, or id., for 50 grammes (not quite. Soz], which is double the present rate.
In the case of fluctuation of currencies which might make it of advantage to send postal matter unstamped or insuficiently stamped from one country to another, oh- ligatory and complete stamping may be claimed. As regards air company service full liberty is given to administrations run- ning air lines to stipulate their own rate. The exceedingly low rate for printed mat- ter for the blind id. per lh was voted. The dispatch by letter of opium, cocaine, and other drugs is prohibited. These may only be forwarded by parcel post.
The next Postal Congress will be held at Stockholm in 1924. The congress has examined upwards of 3,000 proposals, many of which had to be rejected. Only the eccondary convention regarding parool post and money orders, to which Great Britain is not a party, remains to be con cluded.
Une cecasion for mirth occurred when the translator during a discussion as to whother paddy rico" should be allowed to be caried by post translated paddy rico as riz die Irlandais.
CLIMATE TO ORDER. HOW ARID TRACTS MIGHT BE MADE PRODUCTIVE.
The artificial formation in South Africa of a lake as large as Great Britain was one of the suggestions put forward by Professor E; H. L. Schwartz in the course of a lecture on The Control of Climate by Lakes before the Royal Geographies! Society, He showed how dead forests and human and animal skeletons marked the area between South-West Africa, Rhodesia, and the Transvaal, which had been deprived of natural irrigation by the disappearance of lakes and the divert sion of rivers which had watered the Kalahari region
There were there, he said, vast tracts of country suitable for cultivation await- -ing a regular water supply, and he aug- gested the cutting off of rivere running into the Zambesi and turning them south, and the formation of a lake cover- ing about 20,000 square miles as a reser voir for flood water north-west of the Kalahari conntry The question was whether, owing to evaporation being in excess of rainfall, the lake would die appear. One effect, he thought, would be that when the wind blew inland the atmosphere, being humid, would allow precipitation, so that the rains would fall in due season with fair average intensity, instead of in cloud-bursts following drought.

Mobiloils MA grade for each type of motor
Other things being equal-Lubri- cating oils are best that change the least in their properties under the varying conditions to which they are subjected in practical use. This is so, because having once established that a particular lubricating oil, of certain properties, is the best for a given machine, it is manifest that if these properties change, it is equiva- lent to using another oil and this may not, and indeed is not, likely to be the correct oil for the purpose, And this change of oil will take place as often as the conditions change. One of the most change- able conditions found in machinery is temperature. This is constantly changing from day to night, from winter to summer, and under varying stresses of working conditions.
Why not buy the correct grade of Gargoyle Mobiloils-the oil, that lubricates most-for the lubrication of your motor car? When the correct grade of Gargoyle Mobiloils is used, you are insured against undue wear and consequent repairs regardless of climatic conditions or changing temperature.
Fill your crank case with the correct grade of Gargoyle Mobiloils at the Hongkong Hotel Garage and watch the remarkable effect upon the operation of your car especially on hills.
