EXTREMIST, AGITATORS AT WORK: [TROM QUE OWN CORRESPONDENT]

EDINBURGE, October 20th

The average mining town is at the best an unisepiring place. Apart from the main street, with the shops and stores thas upply the necessaries and some of the luxuries of life, it consints for the most part of rows of small houses, and in the background there loom the shafts and the wing heaps of" the coal mines. The towns in the File conifelds that I visited yester dayseemed even more dreary than usual, A lenden sky and a sharp wind blowing over, a bare landscape imparted a sugg¢4. tion of the coming winter. Groups of idle men stood in listless posture along the main streets and in the rows. There was an atmosphere of gloom, and one seemed to feel that over these towns lay the threat of privation and hardship. There was anxiety in the faces of the women at the docks of the cottages, there were STATS looks among the more mature men. The younger miners, of course, with no house. bold cares to trouble them seemed less concerned. One

"The Red Flag, gaily whistled it must however be said "for the long-headed Filers that they are less tainted with the Red fever than their brethren in the Lanarkshire conf Belds. But the Socialist agitator is at work among them and is sure to find recruits in the tanks of the less sensible and responsible.

The men are generally reticens in ex pressing opinions on the strike. Some of the young miners are inclined to show a truculent spirit; the attitude of the older men seems to be that, a strike bay- ing come upon them like the visit of an epidemic fever, it must be borne mith patience till it has run its course, And while this is happening, the rainer, who could bring home substantial wage when he was working, finds himself in the receipt of 198. & week, with ere shiling extra for each child. That is the strike. llowance in Fifeshire, the amount "vary ing in different parts of Scotland, accord. ing to the state of the district funds.
