The average mining town is at the best an unisepiring place. Apart from the main street, with the shops and stores thas upply the necessaries and some of the luxuries of life, it consints for the most part of rows of small houses, and in the background there loom the shafts and the wing heaps of" the coal mines. Groups of idle men stood in listless posture along the main streets and in the rows.
