RUSSIA'S GOLD STORE.

HOW IT WAS DISPERSED.

·

In Meure. Samuel Montagu & Co.'s review of the foreign exchanges there ap pears an interesting account of Mr. W. J. Novitsky, former Asistant Minister, of Finance of the All Russian Government, of how the stock of gold held by Russia when the Tsar was deposed has been dis persed. He relates that in-1014 the gold -ruserve. way ever £180.000,000. When war broke out-payments for war supplies and coupons on external loans led to shipment The first shipment to of gold abroad." England of £3,000,000 took place in Octo ber, 1914. The cruiser Drake and the transport Mantois, were kept 30 miles off, Archangel and the gold was transferred. on board daring the night. Notwithstand ing the precautish Germany became aware of the shipment, and the Drake and the Mantois, met with mine fields own by German submarines. The gold reached Liverpool eventually, but the Government this further shipments by from refrained route. Subsequent shipments were conveyed by rail to Vladivostock, and a Japanese. creiser took it to Vancouver, B. C. Further shipments of £40,000,000 and £20,000,000 wers later arranged between the two Governments. Shipments were and Partly fo made partly to Japan Lanada. The above shipments accounted for a decrease in the Rassian balding of £68,000,000. "Is October, 1927, ahous £500,000 was shipped to Stockholm, and still kept in the Swedish Riksbank. Of the gold that remained in Russia at the time of thu Boisbevist upheaval, £150,000,000 half was stored in Samara, and then in Kizan,, and the remainder in Moscow and Petrograd. The Soviet Gov ernment was forced to ship to Berlin, out. of the Moscow funds Roubles 320,000,000, in accordance with the Brest Litovsk Pesce Treaty, and the Germans also re ceived gold to the equivalent of 350,000,000 credit roubles. The gold, which represent- ed the first car-third of the Russian con tribution, was handed over to the Allies in the autumn of 1918 in accordance with the conditions of the Armistice, and is ០០៧ : ;

KOLTOHAK'S GOLD.

When, in July, 1918, the Bolshevista were forced to evacuate Karan, they had no time to remove the gold, 30,000 prods (288,000,000), and it was captured from them. In August this gold was trans ported to Samaca, and was stored there until the Assembly left for Ufa, whence the gold, was removed. After several ad- Гл ventures this gold reached Omak. May, 1810, sales of gold began to cover purchases of military supplies, and gold was shipped to Hongkong in connection with а credit opened by an Anglo-Ameri- can syndicate. Altogether there was shipped from Omsk 13,234, of which 11,234 Out Poods reached Vladivostock safely.

After the arrival at Novoni kolajevsk, in consequence of difficulties in obtaining, locomotives from the Czechs, there was delay in reaching Nijncadinsk, where Admiral Kelichak was forced to leave the gold. The fate of the train is uncertain. The production of gold in Siberia, which was about £9,000,000 in 1914, declined to £4,500,000 in 1916, and, Minister of Finance in Omsk the quantity for 1917 was £3,500,000, and in 1918 and 1919 about £2,500,000 each your.

Mr. W. F. Denning, a well-known covered on August 20th a new stag in the constellation Cygnus. It is an interesting. fact that Mr. Deaning wag one of the individual discoverers of the bright Nova of June, 1918. Ever since then he has been on the alert for meteors and now stars, and his vigilance has been now re- warded.

The Astronomer Royal reports that the new star discovered by Mr. Denning was photographed at Greenwich and was also observed by the Transit Circle. Its posi tion for 19200 is R.A. 19 hrs. 56min. 24.63 sec.; declination, 53deg. 24min. 1.1sec. It's magnitude (visual) is 3min. 5sec. Colour pale yellow, Examination of earlier catalogues and photographs shows no star in this position so bright as 13.0 magnitude. There are, however, many faiater stars in this neighbourhood, and enreful measurements of earlier photo- graphs will be required before it is possible to say whether the star is or is not identi- cal with one of these.

C. T. SURRIDGE, Acting Freight and Passenger Agent, Prince's Buildings, los flouse Street, Telephone, Plasinger Dept. 1934. Telephone, Freight Dept. and Agent 2161.

In the course of his statement to a that since the discovery of 1918 he had. continued watching for meteor, which was bis special fold of work, and had con stantly run his ayatover constellations with a view to detecting a new star should it. appear. He proceeded:-

On Friday night I went out to observe at 9.20, Greenwich mean time, and in a few minutes detected a star in the North ern region of Cygnus which I could not remember to have seen before, and which I had not noticed on the previous night. Having become very familiar with the con- figuration of the great proportion of naked eye stars," I decided that the object alluded to must be a stranger and probably a new star. On consulting my catalogues and star atlases I quite failed to identify the object, and therefore con-

star cluded that

On Saturday

it was impossible to say whether the star was really brighten- tug or fading, for on the right of its dis

covery clouds came over the sky and pre vented my watching it through the morn ing hours. When I first observed it tha object was within a few degrees of zenith; and its position in Cygnus shows it to be in the Milky Way, where nearly all the new stars of past years have appeared.
