PROGRESS IN TIBET.

NEW POST OFFICE AND MINT. Tibet seems to be making progress, says the Times of India. A new mint is being set up near the Dalai Lama's palace (call Heraulhug). Two minting machines have been imported and the old method of turn- ing ous coins by hand is discarded. A gold coin called sertank weighing 1 tola, and of the face valus of Rs has been put La circulation; also a silver dollar, called sang, of the favë valno of Rs. 9-8 has best introduced. Also a copper coin, mimilar in shape to the Indian nickel anda bit, bas been minted and in freely etrenkating

Lately a Tibetan gentleman nanied Kipeg was trained in Kalimpong in tele. graph signalling. He has now returned

after completing his studies and is doing up the complicated Tibetan alphabet in Morse code. Wood for telegraph poles has been collected in many bealities between ! Gyantse and Lhasa, but there seems to be no wire for them.

There are now anty about 300 half bred MEASRS. SHANKS & CO., LTD. Chinese in Lhasa who work as barbers, carpenters pad bakers, etc. No other Chi- nese are there now, and the people do not wish them any good. All houses and other buildings that were furmerly owned by the Chinese have been razed to the grond. The people and the officials are all favour- ably disposed towards the British. The country is tranquil and there are no signs of Bolshevist penetration.

price

A tax on chhang would relieve the situation and also plenish the coffers of the Dalai Lama Beef, mutton and pork are sold each in separate market. Sugar is about Rs. 5 to the seer and a packet of BattleAxe cigarettes, of, which the people are very fond, an anna and a half. Foot and auth disease has broken out among the raks all along the trade route between India and Lhasa and numberless animals have died..

SANITATION.

Conservancy arrangements are non-exist- ent and the filth and stench are unbearable in summer. The water supply is very defective and tainted. There is only one decent road on the outskirts of the city, Ownerless dogs of all sorts are everywhere, The police system is not worth mach. People dare not go to the suburbs at night after the curfew gun has been fred at nine. Even the lanes inside the city are not safe at nights

Lhasa gets spring cleaned once a year, in April, on the occasion of a festival, when the Lamas are given the run of the city and the houses are made neat and trim and the rarda-swept. Each householder 19 innde responsible for the bit of street in front of him and woe betido any unlucky family whose work is not properly done, they are mercilessly beaten.

The Dalai Lama is very partial to horses and dogs, and he has stables and kennels fall

of the best in the country. He is for tunate in having as his able City Governor and Commander-in-Chief Tsharong Sawang Chhampo, who has introduced all the re forms enumerated above and has more in hand.

COST OF A SUIT. PERHAPS LESS THAN 20 GUINEAS NEXT WINTER,

In the House, of Commons, recently, Mr. Hurd (U. Frome, Somerset) asked the President of the Board of Trade whether! he was aware that the average price for best quality, British, made, worsted suits was no approximately, and allowing for exchange, in New York £80, in Paris 60 F12 Berlin £200, and in Montreal and how these prices compared with those charged for similar suits to British consumers in Britain,

Sir Robert Horne said the price of best quality worsted.suiting made by high class tailors in Britain was approximately from 16-gaincus to 18 guides, though prices varied to some extent according to locality. He had no information bearing out the statements in the question as to the prices abroad, but he understood that the prices of British made suits were considerably higher in foreign markets than in Britais, Replying to a further question Sir Robart Horne said he understood that fancy worst ed suitings of the best quality were being offered to London tailors at from 40m, to 45. per yard. The price charged per suit depended to some extent on the locality and the class of tailor employed, advised that a suit made of 1902. fancy He was worsted ought not to cost more than twenty guinen next winter. The increased price was due to a number of facts, Including the increase in the price of all merino wool, the rise-in-wages, the reduction in hours,
