"HUNTSGREEN!

The special Parliamentary correspondent | of the Singapore Free Presi, writing from the House of Commons, on June Siby says: Mr. Houston, the great Liverpool ship- owner, has performed-a-public-service=by ventilating some of the grievances from which passengers to the Far East have The totally insufficient accom- suffered. modation provided for, first-class passengers has too frequently been the subject of bitter complaint and it is hoped that now the matter has been brought to the notice of Parliament action will be taken to ri move the grievances. I am informed that the conditions on board the Hanisgreen were not by any means exaggerated by Mr. Houston and that the victims included several passengers to Singapore,...

The matter was brought forward by Mr. Houston asking Coinnel Wilson, the Parlia mentary Secretary to the Shipping Con- troller, the following series of question Whether the transport Hurtagreen formerly the Norddeutscher Lloyd tamer Derfinger, which sailed from this country on or about "March 19th lust for Bombay, Singaporn, and Hongkong, embarked a large number of troops, families, ladies, and repatriated officers and men whether he is aware that, whilst no complaint was made in connection with the "first class accommodation, the allocation of same and the arrangements in connection with, the onbarkation of the passengers were deplor able; whether he is aware that a large portion of the second class accommodation was used for officers and their wiges, and families entitled to fir class "accommoda ition, and that tu gain access to this second

class accommodation, the' occupante, includ-j ing the ladies, required to pass along the after well deck occupied by troops latrince, and wash-houses, often in a dalthy condi tion; that as the second claws cabins, decupied by first class passengers, were! Inf of the second-class saloon, it was neces sary for the ladies to frequently pass through the saloon whilst the waren; and. non-commissioned oficers were at their meals; thus, while, the Jadies were subjected to this inconvenience, a number of uD- married subalterns were quartered in the first class state rooms; whether he is awAFO that, no "intimation of having to accept second class accommodation under the circumstances was given to anyone until Tuotually on board; whether he is aware that a captain in the Royal Army Medical "Corps," his wife, and four daughters aged 12, 20, 14 and 12 were allotted to and ex- pected to occupy one four-berth cabin in (he second class accommodation; whether be is-aware that for 13 days during the -rayage-no-freakwater was obtainable--in chid second class mbine; can he state which Government department was responsible for the unsatisfactory condition attending la embarkation of the passengers and can he give any assurance that further pas Ingen proceeding to the East shall receive better consideration and condi tions.

Colonel Wilson, in reply, said: 'I am afraid I cannot undertake to give detailed answers to all the numeroas points raised in this long question, and I had not pre viously heard that complaints had been made as to the character of the accom- madation provided on this vessel. I have -gone very carefully into each of these points mentioned in the question, and am satisfied that, though, owing to extreme pressure on' passenger accommodation to the Far East, it was not possible to give precisely the same chaiieter of accommodation as under normal conditions, every effort was made by the officers of the Ministry of Shipping and War Offer to secure that the ship would be in every respect, fi for the car- riage of the passengers,

ENGLISH CLOTH FOR GERMAN POLICE.

MANUFACTURERS PROTEST.

The Voustache Zeitung published on May 2nd an article from reliable source," complaining that in order to provide tho Sicherheitspolizei, or Green Police, with undforms, the authorities had purchased English cloth at prices greatly exceeding those which German firms were prepared to accept. About two months ago, the writer Bayn, the Beschuffungsstele (Supply De- partment) of the Sicherheitspolizoi received from the Government department respon- sible an import licence for 300.000 metres of cloth at the fixed price of 75,000,000 marks, and a few weeks later a further licence was issued for the import of 400,000 metres at a price of just over 70,000,000 marks.

German firma were willing to provide the cloth at the price of 170 marks per metre, mont, of it at once, and the remainder in Tour or five weeks, and made every effort to obtain the contract," but in vain. The writer continues that the English cloth was. khaki colour and had to be dyed. It ultimately cost 203 marks per metro, a total of over 906,000,000 marks, as a compared with a total of 118,000,000.marks.fox.which. the cloth could have been obutined from German firms bet

The Ministry of the Interior.denies that the facts are as stated by the contri- bitor of the Ponache Zeitung. It do clares that for more than a year the Supply Department of the Sicherheitspolizei has been; endeavouring to secure clothing for tho police and has conducted correspond- ence with a number of German firms with out result The authorities have made every effort to obtain cloth at home, but German industry has been unable to supply it and only now, when the exchange has risen suddenly, comes forward with tenders. The Ministry, announces that the matter. will be judicially investigated in public.
