RANDOM REFLECTIONS

Our old friend Colonel John Ward, who was greatly interested while in Hongkong in the subject of "girl slavery," has been worrying the Colonial Office on the subject since his return to England, and has twice asked questions

in

Parliament concerning it. The Colonel's interest in the matter was first excited by a case bearing on the question in the Supreme Court in the course of which the Chief Justice was moved to ask:

What is slavery? The assumed inno- cence of the Judicial Bench made a strong impression on the mind of the Navvies M.P.

The Colonel may have been as surprised. as I am, to learn since his return Home, that somewhat similar slavery" is practised even in the United Kingdom, It was revealed in a recent case in the Divorce Court that, wives are still market able goods in some parts of the United Kingdom, notably in South Wales. Mr. Tyndale, one of the Counsel appearing in the case, told the Judge that he knew of a particular district in South Wales where, contracts for the bargain and sale He of a wife were often entered into. added that he had advised in such cases more than once. The parties put the con- tract into writing themselves; they do not get lawyers to draw up the document In a conversation with a Press more sentative after the case, Mr. Tyndale said It is quite a common thing in the colliery districts of Wales for a miner to sell his wife. The usual form of contract

is something like this:---

The Admiral referred in very laudatory terms to the Union Jack Club, at Shanghai, mentioned that 373,000 had been provided for the establishment of a similar club at Singapore. and suggested
