OUR FOREIGN TRADE. RUSH FOR BRITISH GOODS. DEALINGS WITH GERMANY.

While the statement in the memorandum recently issued by the Board of Trade pointing to the desirability of traders a proper making every effort to secure footing in Central Europe is fully appre ciated in manufacturing circles at Home the feeling prevaEs that, with orders flow- ing in for British goods, as they are at present, from other parts of the world, it will be a considerable time before there is a great expansion of trade with Gar many and other inte enemy countries. But inquiries by a representative of The Daily Telegraph showed that British manufac turers are watching closely the commer cal possiblities in Central Europe.

The requirements there are great (a trade representative remarked) but the difficulty is in getting payment, owing large to the adverse rate of exchange Take, for example, a German requiring boots Before the war he might have obtained a pair in England for twenty marks. The increased cost of production would now make the price from forty-five to sixty marks. Then that sum has to be multiplied about times owing to the adverse rate of exchange, so that the pries of the boots has risen from twenty to 800 marks. Germany has to produce and export in order to improve her rate of exchan, and until that is done there appears to be little probability of a great increase in our export trade with her.. But the situation is being watched for developments,

At the moment, however, British mann facturers have more orders than: they can execate from other parts of the world Reports show that their reputation as In continues. reliable producers textiles, for instance, there is an enor mous demand, and factories have suffi cient orders to keep them busy for a year. The prospects of our export trade are eplendid; what is needed is greater pro, duction. There is even a large demand for what may be described as articles of hxury from the inited States, which we Important cannot adequately meet orders are also being received for goods from Central and South America," not- withstanding American competition. This, perhaps, is not surprising, having regard to the trade which Germany did there before the war. Traders in the United States are naturally making a great effort to take advantage of the situation, and are establishing new ship ping lines to South America; but orders continue to How to British manufacturers, The United States has stocks of manu- factured goods which countries require, but which they are not inclined to par chase with the rate of exchange against them.

by

The danger to British trade is that, in of our home market absori- consequence of our output, we ma ing, 80 neglecting our exports, lose touch with foreign markets..

Further inquiries showed that this phase of the present situation is not being overlooked in industrial circles, and in order that foreign connections may be maintained there is a movement among manufacturers to allot a proportion of their output for export purposes

We are in the position at the present time (it was remarked), instead of British manufacturers having, to send salesmen abroad of having buyers from foreign I wonid seem countries-coming here.
