While the statement in the memorandum recently issued by the Board of Trade pointing to the desirability of traders a proper making every effort to secure footing in Central Europe is fully appre ciated in manufacturing circles at Home the feeling prevaEs that, with orders flow- ing in for British goods, as they are at present, from other parts of the world, it will be a considerable time before there is a great expansion of trade with Gar many and other inte enemy countries. But inquiries by a representative of The Daily Telegraph showed that British manufac turers are watching closely the commer cal possiblities in Central Europe.
The requirements there are great (a trade representative remarked) but the difficulty is in getting payment, owing large to the adverse rate of exchange Take, for example, a German requiring boots Before the war he might have obtained a pair in England for twenty marks. The increased cost of production would now make the price from forty-five to sixty marks. Then that sum has to be multiplied about times owing to the adverse rate of exchange, so that the pries of the boots has risen from twenty to 800 marks. Germany has to produce and export in order to improve her rate of exchan, and until that is done there appears to be little probability of a great increase in our export trade with her.. But the situation is being watched for developments,

The attention of British nationals residing in foreign countries who are holders of securities issued by the German Government is directed to article 200 of the Treaty of Peace, clause 3 and 4 of which article provide that the following pecuniary obligations shall be settled through the intervention of Clearing Offices in Great Britain and Germany:- Clause -Interest which has accrued due before and during the war to a national of one of the Contracting Powers in respect of securities issued by an Opposing Power, provided that the pay ment of interest on such securities to the nationals of that Power or to neatrals has not been suspended during the war. Clausa 4-Capital sums which have become payable before and during the war to nationals of one of the Contract ing Powers. in respect of securities issued by nue of the Opposing Powers, provided that the payment of such capital sums to nationals of that Power or to neutrals has not been suspended during the war
British nationals resident in foreign countries who have claims of this nature which have not already been notified to the Public Trustee should apply to the Controller of the Clearing Office (Enemy Debta), Cornwall House, London, B.E. 1, for the necessary form on which to submit their claims. British nationals who have already, notiâed the Public Tristee should await a communication from the Controller.
