STUDENTS AGITATION

The Civil Governor has ordered the studente o strike to return to their studios on January 3rd the latest, failing which they will be expelled. BIG BURGLARY.

An extensive burglary was reported to have taken place in a physician's house in Saiwan yesterday morning, when Jewellery worth more than $20,000 whe atolea. A'marriage ceremony was in pro- gress and there vete's number of guests in the house at the time. The burglars: entered the house from the roof and com panced looting after intimidating the inmates with revolvers. After spending several hours in searching for jewellery, the burglars left by the front door. Before leaving they put Ü long conts to disguise themselves as gracets of the family. Several of the neighbours have been arrested by the police on suspicion. ROAD IMPROVEMENT.

The Directors of the Municipal Council have ordered that the road leading from the Canton-Kowloon Railway Station to Sarho, on the eastern outskirts of the city must be widened to 150 feet, and trees planted along the middle of the road New roads, 40 feet wide, are also to be built in the areas destroyed by the recent fires.

LORD DUNSANY.

In a letter to Stuart Walker, his American producer, Lord Dunsany wrote aa follows when questioned as to the correct pronounciation of his name:- "Nobody should pronounce my name Dun' sa ny, for pretty as the dactyl is it is not dactyl Those who call it Doousahny have every right to do so, for since it is the aame of an Irish pisce one can hardly blame people for pronouncing it in an old Irish unanglicised manner" I don't know about the Sahay, but Doon is I believe a quite correct pronounciation of those circular things which in Ireland aro usually spelt dun and which appear in London as don, from one of which my name evidently had its name. But as a matter of fast I pronounce it Dun, sa' ny, with the accent on the second syllable which is pronounced as say, the first Payable thyming with gun,

This will be of interest to those who are în doubt as to the correct pronoun- ciation of the name of one of England's foremost modern writers and who intend seeing the University Students in two of Lord Dunsany's finest Plays of Wonder, to be given at the Theatre Royal on February 13th., 14th and 18th.

FRENCH ART TREASURES.

WHAT THE EMBASSY HOLDS. President "Poincare's visit to London gave an opportunity of seeing the art treasures of the French Embassy at Albert-gate. They are certainly numerous, and the most important are the not beautiful pieces of tapestry.

Three of theas are particularly fine, and bistori cally interesting series of twelve ordered by Louis XIV. They are part of a from the Clobelins factory, which repre scht his hunting chateaux. The other panels of the set were distributed among the French Embassies at

grad, and Madrid. Berlin, Petro Zodias and the symbol of the Boi Boleit The signs of the are woven into the general design of each piece. Those at Albert-gate splendidly represent the art and craft of the famous factory. The subjects are expressed with a-freedom generally associated with oil painting. The modelling and action of the figures are remarkable, particularly in the case of the animals on the borders of the panels There are also a charming serces in the ball-room and four exquisite panels in the Bed Salon, of Louvain origin

The portraits at the Embassy, if they have little artistic merit, represent men of the highest standing, not only as Am- bassadors of France to the Court of St Jamen, but great figures in French hi tory The earliest portrait represents the first Duc de Broglie, who was Ambassador in England in 1724; the third Duke was appointed to this post in 1870. The Am bassadorial portraits that bear the most familiar punes are those of Chatena briand, who was the father of Roman- ticism,

and Talleyrand, rake, cynic, and| wit, who, in 1704, was compelled to leave London under the provisions of the Aliens Act. There are also portraits of Guizot, the historian, who was Ambassador in 1840, Rochefoucauld, Pelissier, Duc de Malakoff, Leon Say, and M. Paul Cambon," the present Ambassador,
