LONDON, September 3rd. The position with regard to Russia remains someway obscure. We have had official ((LAST) FINOW on behalf of the Government that we are not going to prosecute extensive military adventures in that country. More recently Mr. Churchill specifiendly stated", from his place in Parliament that the British. Army in Northern Russia was being evacuated, but he added that very wide discretion must be allowed to the British Commanders as to how this operation is to be carried out,

Immediately following this announce ment came the news of the sinking of three Russian warships off Kronstadt by British naval forces, and within the last few days messages have, arrived in Lon- don telling of an advance by our troops towards Petrograd. Troops are ไม being dispatched from here ustensibly to help our men in Russia to get clear of the country. It, therefore, appears that at the time we are supposed to be definitely leaving Russia, we are in fact fighting and advancing towards the capital.

Critics of the Governmen: policy and material in these happenings to throw stones at the Labinet. There is also the question of expense, something like so million, having already Been spent on the expedition to Northern Russia, both on our own account, and in support of Ad miral Koltchak. All this huge expendi ture, say the critics, is absolutely wasti ed; we have nothing to show for it. Moreover, the question is raised whether Koltchak is any better than Trutsky or Lenin.
