ING FAVOURE The Concerned,
at the fundamental principle of trade NO. 102, THE PEAK, 6-Roomed House unionism, namely, collective bargaining.
Under any circumstances, unauthorised strikes cannot and must not be tolerated, And it is the duty of all who desire to see the trade union movement strengthen. ed to see to it that the union's action shall be governed and regularised in agreement with its constitution and rules. Any other course must necessarily and. seriously weaken the union's efficiency and effectiveness in securing estisfactory results for its members.
DEFIANCE OF PUBLIC INTERESTS.
In another direction a strike has occur. red which, whilst apparently imposing upon the employer the minimum of pres sure, has undoubtedly inflicted upon the workers and the general public (whose opinion it would be unwise to disregard) the maximum of personal inconvenience apart altogether from monetary loss, and in many cases probable injury to health. In this instance the men's leaders had secured for their members an eight-hour working day. The main principle hav been conceded, it is only reasonable to assume that, if raised in the proper spirit, any minor points requiring ad justairnt would bave proved easy of settlement. But the position was accen- tuated by the fact that two strong unions catering for precisely the same class of workers, but not always working in friendly relationship, were each endear ouring to secure settlement satisfac tory to its own members, although ob viously such settlement would nocea
any sarily apply to the members of the other

In the opinion of the Parliamentary Committee, rather than attempt to play any one union against another, it would be far better that the representa tives of the organisations should meet in friendly conference, and endeavour so arrange a mutually satisfactory working agreement, thereby avoiding a recurrence of the disagreeable incidente of the past With this object in view, the few days. Parliamentary Committee place their sor vices at the disposal of all affiliated or believing it to be in the best
