HINGAFORE LINE-The sa "VAN WAERWIJCK* leaves for Singapore spprozi mately every fortnight. This vessel has excellent sccommodation for First-class passengers, and is fitted throughout with Electric Light and Fans and also carries a fully qualified Burgeon.

SHANGHAI LINE --Sailings approximately every five days between Canton and Shanghai, sometimes calling at Swstow. Steamers on this line have limited amount of passenger accommodation, and through tickets can be obtained for Northern and Yangtr Ports via Shanghai. Through Bils of Lading are issued to all Northern and Yangtze Porta.

MANILA LINE :—A weekly service is maintained with Manila by vessels with good

passenger accommodation, sailings from both porta every Friday."

HAIPHONG LINE-Sailings approximately weekly for passengers and cargo, calling

at Haihow when inducement offers.

BORNEO LINE-One sailing per month "between Hongkong and Bandskin by ⋆

The object of the code is to give at least 24 hours warning of a 'gale (Force 8 by Beaufort Scale, or 40-45 m.p.h. mean valocity by Dines Anemométer) sad also warnings of expected changes in the direction and force of the wind. Owing, & however, to the uncertain movements of typhoons and to insuficient telegraphie observations, it will occasionally happen that signals to 5 may be displayed without a gale occurring at Hongkong, or even Gap Rock, but the reverse is not likely to happen, except in the esse of typhoons forming in the vicinity and travelling rapidly towards Hongkong, or of a located typhoon increasing ita rátaj of progression abnormally.

Signal No. 1 is intended as a warning to "Stand By" and watch for the next signal
