AN INDIAN AT CANTON.

When a violent tempest is raging every bady's mind is engrossed in a ship in one thing-how best to save the ship; and when the tempest has subsided each will recount what the other did to avert catastrophe. Ju liko thanner, when this Great War is over the extent of India's share in it will be fully known. At present only officials in India and the powers- that be in England know it. When first the news of the outbreak was flashed to India there was general consternation;. when this passed away it was followed by a great enthusiasm to help. Princes, Rajah nabobs, and other Indian mag- aates and the people generally vied with one another to do their bit,?"

Kenderding ears, floating hospitals, aeroplanes, etc., were spontaneously offered, and the great est enthusinsin prevailed when it was known that Indian Regiments would be sent to the front to fight with their British comrades-in-arms. It was the proud- ost moment of their lives, for they had long brea impatient to show their loyalty for their rulers. Britancia, if thy trial is great, thy pride is greater!

This all is well-known to the English- mon in London, but out in the Far East:- where German intrigue and baseless rumours are rile, English, French, and neutral friends ali axiously inquire how matters fare in India, or if rumours of trouble in India are true. The answer expectations of the rulers themselves. The psychology of the Indian mind at this time will be interesting reading, thanks to the refined Kultur exhibited in the base and heart-rending cruelties to the people of Belgium, the intunan treatment of the British prisoners, the bombardment and desecration of the Cathedrala and places of worship, and the pollution of the Can- vents by the German-the greatest and unpardonable crime in the eyes of even the meanest Indian. RUSSIAN GUESTS.

THE MYTH ABOUT INDIA

The distinguished Russian jourraliste visiting Great Britain were entertained 26 dinner at the Ritz Hotel by the News paper Proprietora" Association. Lord Burnham presiding-

Lord Robert Cecil spoke of tho Czar's devotion to duty, (Cheers.) Our enemies unbroken courage and single-minded Laye tried to make the world believe that England is a robber State and that the danger to the peace of the world comes from Russia. No two greator libels could be imagined, Both cations passionately desire peace.. We are fighting with all our strength because we believe that only by our victory can pence be secured. We are fighting for our honour, for our safety, but above all for the ponce of the world. (Applause.)

In mplying to the tunst of the Czar, M. Constantine Nabokoff, Councillor of the Russian Embassy. said all new hig Majesty had always been a staunch friend of Great Britain

Lieutenant-General Sir James Wolfe Murray, speaking in Russian, said we Arms believed this visit would bring about a complete uning of hearts between the Russian and British nations, We could not but feel, to quote a well-known Russian poet, that an end was coming to the darkness.

Lord Burnham said: During this, the greatest, cruellest, and most catastrophic. war in the annals of mankind. there had been on both the English and the Russian sides the greatest and fullest admiration for what each Empire had done and at- tempted for the common cause.

This alliance of war would becoine an alliance

of peace also. The soul of England is

warm towards Russia.

A speech of M, Nemirovitch-Dantchenke, a veteran journalist, was read in English. Referring to the legend about the will of Peter the Great in favour of a march on ORDERS BY MAJOR WAKEMAN, O.C., H.ÂV.&

India. he said the utmost search had been made in Russin for this testament, Its failure proved that the genial creator of odern Bussia could never have bequeath- ed such a senseless legacy to his people. From his seventy years knowledge of Rus sian life, the speaker said that the people of Russia who dreamt about the conquest of India could be found in Russia only in a wadhouse. His memory recalled the Turkish war of 1877-1878. Archibald Forbes had said to him he feared he would Rot have the skill to draw the Russina soldier worthily, so that the hearts of England should understand him, and that if and when this understanding did some about there would be no words that could separate the two countries, He believed that this hour had come. England's sailors had won the gratefullest respect and love of their Russian comrades. He saw in the not distant future fresh laura's added to the monument of Nelson. Russians for their part were not losing a single hour is preparing to take their place worthily beside their Allies

Mr Robert Donad said the advane of Russia into East Prussia had as much to do with the saving of Paris as had the gizga of Liége. (Cheers.)

M. Eguroff hoped that the British and French, who are stronger than ourselves in the domain of industry, will not leave the German razd an open one, but will oust Geruany from the Russian market and succeed in establishing a basis of just and equitable business relations with Russia. (Cheers.)

IMPASSABLE CORDON FOR THE LEPERS OF EUROPE.

This detestation. continues the writer, will continue after the war, and after the resurrection of the kingdom of Bel- giam, which today is more certain thin. ever, many years will pass by before eny German will be able to penetrate into Des. Begium without exposing himself to the most serious risks. The Germans have conducted the way in such a way that the have drawn upon themselves general exoeration. Once peace is signed an im passable wall will be erected between the Central Empires and the remaining beli- gorent countries. ** Even if Germany were victorious this continued aversion of the Allies and of manny neutrals, which will be evident in All spheres-religious, commercial, finan cial, political alike would constitute for Germany an irreparable disaster for which no indemnity could possibly compensate her. After the war the Germans will be regarded as the lepers of Europe; no one among the Allies will want to have any kind of contact with them. This is what the Geraviny have reaped by violating the great principles of justice and humnaity the rules of Germany will learn to their cost that Nemesis awaits them, and that one cannot place oneself outside the rules of common morality with impunity.
