THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21TH, 1914

ICRITICISM OF THE PRESS

CENSORSHIP.

The Time ia a lending article says:- We notice a very prevalent tendency, which some members of the Government appear to share, to say unkind things. about the newspapers The newspapers are equally blamed for being too pessimis tic and too optimistic. If they dwell upon the question of invasion, for instance, they are grooted with abuse; if they take a hopeful view of the situation on the Continent, they are told that they are spreading false and injurious impressions, In our opinion, the Press of this country has boharod with great loyalty and restraint in the face of much unwarrant- able official discouragement. The Govern mont have exercised control over the Press with singular incompetence and great lacks of judgment. They red the Pross facilities for collecting information, but promised to undertake the task themselves. They issued communications from the Press Bureau, and sent to the front an Eye-witness whom they hastily labelled

not official." The Eye-witness" is not the representative of the news papers. The Government disclaim him, though they handle his reports. What, then, is the position of this unhappy gentleman, whose last three dispatches were admirably done? Is he allowed to Bay what he wishes, or only what the Government permit him to Bay We make these comments because, if false impressions are prevalent--and on the whole we do not think they are tho Government and not the Press are responsible. In support of this contention we may examine two notable letters wo published yesterday from-officers at the front, One of these officers wrote:-"I blame the home papers tremendously for publishing articles. saying that the
