THE PURITY OF TOBACCO.

A MISTAKEN IDEA.

Some people labour under the mistaken idea that tobacco as supplied to the public is not pure. They suspect that Some Lobaccos ure adulterated with foreign substances. Such suspicions leave out of account b facts--one, that. adulteration would not pay; the other, that the revenne authorities would quickly make au example of anyone who fried to sell domething as tobacco which was not tobacco. The persistence of the Joan who thinks he knows all about it and who knows next to nothing renders Eis currection necessary as often as he pops out with his boary yarn that tubnet goods are adúleraled. There is a time of the year when people, apparently of normal vision, SCH 920 serpents. It is called the silly season.

Stephenson, of Stephenson & Marlin, quite rightly in the interests of trath replied to the assertion. His letter to the editor of one of the Hull prpars clearly seus forth the true facts that though táceos may vary in quality they are pure and without addition of anything excerpt water and in some cases a few drupis of a jun-injurious scent. The stafinwent slant adulteration is known to beso nosurd that most tobacco traders would be content to simply laugh at it. However, considering the grain of truth fin Carlyle's famats, dichim about the inhabitants of Mese islands, it is certainly well that the truth, dvipus Though it is, should be repeated.

AN ANCIENT JEST, This is the view, too, of the editor of Angerivan tobacco trade paper, who castigates a writer who, in describing the tobacco trade exhibits at the Panama world's fair, speaks of cigars generally and classes them from fragrant Havana 10 the article manufactured of the sun kissed and blistered leaf of the lowly and anpretentious cabbage. This would bave been all right for Mark Twain, but a jest may sometimes be taken literally. The editor of our contemporary rightly says that it is not easy to recoint for, but it is nevertheless- fact that i multitude of prople have always taken seriously the venerable joke that in some. way cabbage leaf is duployed in the manufacture of cigars. It is consoling however, to the trader to know that such fancies usually find lodgment in set of hands which do not matter to him. those of prejudiced non-smokers.
