Nervous Breakdown

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH, 1914,

NURSE HALL, c/o Mrs. Bassett, Commercial Place, Landport, Portsmouth, Eng., writes:~“I was suffering from nervous breakdown with Internal Neuralgia, a course of Phosferine. After having when I began taken it for three or four months, I felt better than 1 had done for two years previously, and consider it the best tonic I have ever tried. As a remedy for all nervous disorders I think there is nothing to equal Phosferine, especially as I was given up by more than one doctor previous to taking Phosferine, and can now say I am perfectly well and strong, and have taken nothing else."

No other medicine has received sich absolute proof of its extraordinary properties in restoring Shattered Constitutions, and in giving back to the prematurely aged New Life and Energy.

The Position of Woman in Primitive Society. A Study of the Matriarchy. By O. GASQUOINE HARTLEY (Mrs. Waltor

London: M. Gallichap).

Eveleigh

EL

Nash In this thoughtful book, as its writer contends, an attempt is made to establish the position of the mother in the family but it deals with what is known as the Woman's Movament as we see it today in somewhat violent form in England. Women, we are told, are reclaiming position that is theirs by natural right position which once they held. They are pressing for ward towards a recasting of the patriarchal vion of the relativo position and duties of the two sexes. It must be regarded as as extremely great and comprehensive move tient affecting the whole of life. From this wider standpoint, the fight for the parlin mentary suffrage is but as the vestibulo to progress the possession of the vote being no more than a necessary condition for attaining larger, and more fundamental enda." In other words, while disclaiming that this involves rule by wamer," she wants a recasting of the relationship between the sexes which is nothing less than revolu tionary, a change in the social system which may or may not be favourable to woman herself. So for as she goes to history and ethnography for material there is no need to deal with Mrs. Gallichan's book in detail. She has undoubtedly bestowed a considerable amount of thought to the subject, but it seems to that she is advocating a system which, in the long run, would be subversive of the interests of ber.

The Man of Genius. By HANN FORCE, FOOD PRICES IN HONGKONG"

Ph.D. Translated by the late Professor George J. Tamson, M.A., Ph.D., Lecturer in English at the University of Gottingen. London: Adam and Charles Black.

Since it was first published in 1893, this philosophical work has passed through 10 less than seven editions in Germany. Its value, therefore, may be taken as established beyond all cavi; but if proof of this were needed this is supplied by the long list of extracts from critical notices by eminont Continental scientists and philosophers in the leading newspapers and magazines of Germany. This is the first edition published in the English languagó. The translation is exceedingly well done; in fact, so well done that it might serve as a model for many English writers of their own languago. The contents can best he described in summary form from the publisher's note which accompanies it. From this book there emanates a subtle influence which will be felt by all mon of a deeper nature. It will opon men's souls to the wonder and beauty of the world and reveal the mysteri- ous ties that bind together all existing things. It shows mon their special place in the great universe and, by removing the trammels that obstruct the free action of their will, ondows them with new creative power. It is a book that teaches them to recognise the inner relationship between the great minds of the world, to recognise the profound thoughts and ideals of a Shakes peate in his Hamlet, of a Goethe in his Faust, of a Spinoza or Schopenhauer in his philosophy, of a Buddha and a Christ in their direct striving towards the eternal, an Alexander. a Cesar, a Napoleon in sex, if not of humanity at large. As regards smoke and alcohol, it was possible in most cases to learn to Home extent the amount consumed, and an arbitrary standard was taken as to the limit of moderation consistent with health. In the ease of alcohol this was the daily consumption of 1 pints of beer, or its equivalent, an ounce of spirits being considered equivalent to a half-pint of beer. The standard for smoke was taken 48.2oz. of tobacco per week. Persons con suming more than these quantities have been classed as excessive drinkers or smokers. As regards tobacco, the amount consumed per adult male is 2.4uz. per week, as against 1.7oz. 10 years ago. the amount of tobacco per smoker has juoreased by at least as much.

crime and

PILLS. mystery at once arouses the attention of the reader and keeps him interested to the last page. It seeks to show how the sins of the father are visited upon the children. At a period prior to the opening of the story,

a murder has been committed and for it a man has been hanged. The daughter of the executed man is in love with the son of the judge why sentenced her father to death, Secking her daughter's happiness, the mother, convinced of her husband's innocence and believing that the judge also considered him innocent, sets. herself the task of clucidating the mystery. Her efforts set up the complication of involving the judge's son in the crime, and in the tangle that follows the mystery gets more and more involved till one begins to despair of the fate of the unhapppy lovers. However, all doubts and mysteries are cleared up in a mast logical way, and the story ends on the happy note of love triumphant over all difficulties.
