THE DEMAND JOE "DRUGS.

June 18th The alarming extent to which morphis smuggling has been on the increase in China since the suppression of opium ealtivation is illustrated by a case which has occupied the Mixed Court here this week. It may be mentioned that the importation of morphia into China was illegal even before the opium campaign began, but the prohibition has lately been reinforced by a strong Presidential man- date, and the officers of the Maritime Customs have been ordered, to keep a special look-out for marphia, cocaine, heroin, and the like. The case with which these substances can be smuggled, as compared with opium, which has a strong sell, and the profits obtainable, make the business highly attractive.

A few days ago, on the arrival of the steamer Siking from Japanese ports, a Customs tidewaiter named Galviss noticed a Chinese coming down the gangway with a locked basket on his arm. Eomething in the man's attitude made Galvis (who. had been warned to watch this special ship) suspicious, and be took the Chinese who was one of the Siting's stewards, back on board, and, in one of the cabins,
