There remains one explanation which has not yet been given in print.
With due allowance for all other factors, the fundamental cause may well be the suppression of opium cultivation. Opium was the natural currency of the. Chinese farmer, his margin of wealth out of which he paid for foreign luxuries, such as piece goods, and now he is no longer allowed to grow it. Fourteen provinces means that they are officially clear of native cultivation. Among them is Bze chuan, which was formerly the largest cultivator of native opium and the largest customer of the Shanghai foreign merchant

Let it be borne in mind that opium is the easiest possible crop to cultivate. It will grow anywhere and almost at any time, it needs no manuring or attention. Thus it admirably fills in the time between spring and autumn harvests, When the poppy is in lower the woman go round and score the capanies, next day gathering in bowls the juice that has exuded in the previous 24 hours, That is crude opium, which can, or could, be taken to established shops in the nearest village and exchanged against so much silver. There was just a risk that rain might fall while the capsules were exud- ing and ruin the juice, but the process was so quick that this danger was slight
EFFECTS OF BUPPRESSION,
On the question of the much-discussed curso of opium I will not touch, because it is one on which no amount of tacts sod figures will make the faintest impression on the enthusiastic refermer. I merely mention in passing that the use

INDIGESTION NO MORE THE TYRANT OF A HOUSEHOLD,
because he seized the ruling power A tyrant was so called; first of all, without the consent of the pople. Hence we get the idea of a master who oppresses those under him. It is the melancholy fate of a vast number of people that they have to live under the rule of the stomach and other organs of digestion. They have allowed these important agents of human well-being to get the upper hand; and they grogu under a tyranny, which the harshor and longer it lasts, grows harsher Patience, in its proper place, may be a virtus: hut one cannot tamely submit to the penaltics which follow in A blow for the train of indigestion. freedom must be struck. Now, in all parts of the world, there is a whole host of people, who, during the past forty years, have been freed from these pains by the use of Mother Seigel's Syrup, which, truthfully, may described as the remedy with a reputation for carrying out its work efficiently. Not only have these good folk overthrown tho tyrant, but taking a leaf out of the book of experience, they keep him in constant exile by occasionally calling in the aid of Mother Seigel's Syrup. They have found that it not only restores order to the stomach liver, and bowels, hut han an excellent tonic effect at times when these organs grow a little sluggish and need regulating
Let us clinch this argument with proof. Mrs. J. Smith, of 89, Currey St, East London, Cape Province, under date January 27th, 1914, writes:--
"I look back to six years ago sa being one of the worst times of my career. June 18th The alarming extent to which morphis smuggling has been on the increase in China since the suppression of opium ealtivation is illustrated by a case which has occupied the Mixed Court here this week. It may be mentioned that the importation of morphia into China was illegal even before the opium campaign began, but the prohibition has lately been reinforced by a strong Presidential man- date, and the officers of the Maritime Customs have been ordered, to keep a special look-out for marphia, cocaine, heroin, and the like. The case with which these substances can be smuggled, as compared with opium, which has a strong sell, and the profits obtainable, make the business highly attractive.
A few days ago, on the arrival of the steamer Siking from Japanese ports, a Customs tidewaiter named Galviss noticed a Chinese coming down the gangway with a locked basket on his arm. Eomething in the man's attitude made Galvis (who. had been warned to watch this special ship) suspicious, and be took the Chinese who was one of the Siting's stewards, back on board, and, in one of the cabins,
