THE STATE OF BUSINYAN.

The long-hoped-for revival in business has not set in yet and money consequently continues abundant at low rates. Statos, corporations and others are eager to take advantage of it by negotiating for loans. and fresh issue of capital, but great caution prevails amongst banks and capitalistu and whereas the recent French loan was over-subscribed over to many times, the Balkan Powers as well as the South and Central American Republics do not find it easy to obtain the money they require on terms agreeable to them- selves, and without it the demand for foreign goods from those countries can improve but slowly. Ar to the Near East, the events of the past fortnight and the constant agitation against Austria are not calculated to act favourably on trade, particularly not with that empire. On the other hand, crop prospecta seem most promising everywhore with the exception perhaps of some parts of Russia, and if they materialize, as it is to be hoped they will, it may lead to an increase in the home domand after the summer holidays, to be followed by greater activity in the export trade later on, At present the visible supplies of wheat fall short of those at the same time last year and the invisible ones are not supposed to be as great, but it is confidently believed that the deficiency will be more than made up after the harvest

A, BANK - AMALGAMATION. The absorption of the Schaaffbausens Bankvere by the Disconto Gesellschaft in Berlin is not passing off without u hitch, dissentient shareholders of the former having lodged a potition against the decision of the general meeting held in June recopting the scheme of an amalgamation. The case was to have been brought before the court a few days ago, but the trial has by mutual content been postponed until after the long vacation in September, neither party having so far been able to collect all the evidence required.

AN INTERESTING SUGGESTION..

A subject much discussed in banking circles at present is a suggestion made by.. the director of the Reichsbank, Herr von Havenstein, to the effect that not only should that establishment aim at a steady increase in its available reserve, but that *-*g, including saving banks, should be obliged by law to bend actumi vasi anu easily realizable assets, such as balances with the Reichsbank, gilt-edged securities and good bills of exchange, say, on London, to the extent of 10 per cent of their liabilities, so as to be prepared for all
