Hongkong, 27th July, 1914. SIE,My attention having been drawn to an article by Mr. Yau Suk Yuen, the Chinese." Chu Jen" (M.A.) poet, essayist, and historian, giving the Chinese story of the arrest and release of King Lion Shan, which has appeared in the Wah Tez Fat Po (Chinese Mail) of the 25th inst, I think, after a lapse of fifteen years, it will interest Mr. Yau Suk Yuan, and your European and Chinese readers to know of the part secretly played by myself and my English friends in obtaining the release of King 'Lien Shan from Monte Fort prison, Macao, where he was interned hy the Portuguese Authorities in 1900. It was always my intention to allow the matter to sleep, but, for veracity's sake,

am now daty hound to disclose the truth. King Lien Shan, it will be remembered, was the man who sent the" telogram from Shanghai urging the Empress:Dowager not, to dopose the Emperor Iwang Hau..

On Monday, the 26th February, 1900, in the afternoon, Mr. Tau Sien Ting (dentist) informed me, excitedly, that King Lien Shan, ex-Manager of the Chinese Imperial Telegrapha (Shanghai), had been arrested by the Portuguese Authorities of Macao, and that there was every probability of his being handed over to the Chinese Government to be executed, owing to the great power and influence of the Empress-Dowager's

supporters and secret agents,

The Canton Authorities applied for his rendition on the trumped-up charge that he had misappropriated large amounts of the Telegraphy Administration's funds.

Being told that King Lien Shan was

good

well-known man, and 3 philanthropist, and that he would be immediately beheaded if handed over to the Chinese Government, and grasping the gravity of the situation, I at once wrote to the Hongkong Daily Press, stating the unfortunate man's case, and begging to influence in pre- venting the Portuguese Government from handing King Lien Shan over to the Chinese Authorities. The Daily Press immediately took action, and next mora-

ing (27th February) published a strong lending article warning the Portuguese Authorities of Macao against the crime of delivering the prisoner into the hands of the Canton Authorities. The following is

an extract from that article:-

On the 10th March, 1800, I received through the Fah Ter Yat Po (Chinese Mail) a letter from the members of the Reform Party residing in Macao, convey- ing to me their thanks and gratitude for the services of my friends.

King Lien Shan left, Macao for Hong- kong on the 20th September, 1901.

On the 12th October, 1901, King Lien Shan invited me and my friends, Messrs, Tau Sion Ting, Au Fung Chi and others, to, a Chinese dinner (thanksgiving) at Hang Fa Lau Hotel On the 14th October, 1901-King- Lien Shan personally tendered his thanks and gratitude to H.E. the Governor, Sis Henry A. Blake, K.C. M.G. On the 29th | GOING AND RETURNING WITHIN PERIOD 1ST JUNE-31ST OCT. October, 1901, King Lien Shan sent me a letter enclosing one for transmission to

The influence of a certain Mr. Ho Wai Tin of Macao to everyone interested in the future welfare obtain King Lien Shan's liberty, and that of China should be excried to prevent this King Lion Shan's release from prison crime, which is only another in the long immediately followed! list standing against the names of the Empress-Dowager and her favourites. China can ill spare any good man just now. Still less. can Portugal afford to be associated with the blood-thirsty tyranny- of China's present rulers.

Such a sub- servience, would recall the early days of Macao's history, when there was at least the excuse for servility that China had then the power to enforce that she enn now only demand."

This leading article was immediately. translated into Chinese by the Wah Ter Tat 'n (Chinese Mail), and other Chinese newspapers.

I also wrote to my friend, Mrs. Archi- bald Little, who was then staying at Government House, informing her of King Lien Shan's arrest and imprison ment, and requested her to use her influence in obtaining his release. Mrs. Little replied, "I am writing two letters to high officials at Macao about your friend."

A few days later, Mrs. Little informed ue that H.E. the Governor, Sir Henry A. Blake, and Lady Blake had also taken great interest in King Lien Shan's case.

Viscount Bairdale, A.D.C., informed me at Government House on the 1st March, 1900, the day of Mra. Little's anti-foot- binding lecture to the Chinese ladies of the Colony, that Mrs. Little had received a letter from the Governor of Macao informing her that King Lien Shan would not

be handed over to the Chinese Authorities, unless there was convincing

WOMAN JUDGE.

-ARBITER IN DIVORCE SUIT.

'Her Honour" Judge Grace O'Neill, & frail-looking woman of twenty-six years, acted recently as a special judge in a divorce action in the Superior Court at Vigo, Indiana, and in the opinion of the plaintiff, as well as the lawyers, acquitted herself admirably.

She was raised to the bench as the result of the absence of Judge Cox, who tele- graphed appointing her to adjudicate for hits in a divorce suit instituted by Mrs. Perdita Griffith against her husband, Mr. Voorhees Griffith, the city comptroller.

The novelty of seeing a woman presid ing over a sitting of the Superior Court attracted a large crowd of spectators, including prominent members of the Bar, who offered her their congratulations.

Her Honour Judge O'Neill responded to these congratulations at the close of the case by giving a certificate of good behaviour to the lawyers. * You con- ducted yourselves admirably," she said, and made my experience a most enjoy ablo once

This woman judge had heen the official court reporter for eight years. Two years ago, at the age of twenty-four, she was admitted to practise at the Vigo County Courts.

The divorce suit was comparatively simple. Evidence of cruelty was given by Mrs, Griffith, and there being no defence her honour granted the decree sought.
