THE CHAMPAGNE FOR NAVAL AND

MILITARY MESSES.

The War Office Times and Noval Review says Service Messes have of late years been awakening to the know- ledge of the facts about champagne. We have from time to time heard complaints in respect of the wine stocked as such in some Naval and Military Messes, and our knowledge testifies to the truth of these complaints. The remedy is obviously to stock only a well-known brand which can be relied on, like St. Marceaux, a wine drunk by connoisseurs in every part of the world. As our readers are no doubt aware, the quality, indeed, the very production, of high-class champagne depends upon what are known as vintage years, which occur at irregular intervals, depending, as they do, on the quality of the grapes, which is, of course, affected by atmospheric conditions. The vineyard eru is of equal import- ance with the vintage. To the “ cru?? the wine owes what may be termed its breed. As regards recent vintages, that of 1004 was remarkable for the extreme delicacy and fruitiness of the wine, the quantity of which was, however, some- what small. The 1006 vintage was more plontiful as regards yield and splendid in quality. The vintages since then have heen of no importance in respect of the production, of champagne of fine quality, though, of course, non-vintage wines have been made each year. Nowadays the word vintage is often used loosely, mean- ing little save that the wind was made in a particular year, without any reference to quality. This is, of course, 4. Meisuse · oj the term "intage." Naval and Military officers, not un- naturally, desire to have wines of a high- class, not only for themselves, but for their guests, and their guests, it must be remembered, are frequently, really, if not technically, the country's guests. ... Our advice to Messes which may not aiready do so, is to stock St. Marceaux, supplied by all wine merchants, a grand wine, which is certain considerably to appreciate in value at no distant date. We may add that the St. Marceaux brand has been in evidence ut many Naval and Military banquets held in London and elsewhere, and we know that officers who bave had an opportunity of testing it have pronounced it to be a superb wine. We agree in this opinion," and we have no hesitation in asserting that amongst the famous brands of champagne it occupies a foremost place.

Referring to the economic situation of the countries within the bank's sphere of activity, the report goes on to say that the export of rice from Cochin China in 1913 ounted to 1,180,000 tons, a quan- tity which had not been attained since 1007, and the prospects for the current trade is expected. As a result of the year are such that a still greater export

favourable harvest business in Cambodia and Battambang has again, become normal. In Tong-King the undertakings had to suffer alightly from a decline in business, owing to the less plentiful I harvest of rice and maize; but the pro- duction of ores was greater than in 1912, and, with the exception of rice, a favourable harvest of land products was won in Annam. The agencies of the Banque de Indo Chino in Hongkong and Canton did not suffer from the suspension of payment in Singapore and Biam After stating that a general improvement took place in China, and referring to the first part of the Reorganisation loan, the report mentions. that two questions are at present attract ing attention the redemption of the paper money issued during the revolution and the general monetary reform The solution of these problems requires the assistance of European banks, supported by their respective governments, and the establishment of adequate guarantees. Since the conclusion of the last loan the

results have been more encouraging than had been expected.

At the annual meeting the report and accounts were unanimously adopted, and it was decided to increase the number of directors from 19 to 13, M. George Louis being appointed to the board, and MM. do Germiny and Dorizon being re-elected.
