THE FREIGHT MALKET

Messrs. Lamke & Rogge, of Hongkong, in their circular for 6th June state

As was expected, when last writing on the 23rd ultimo, the freight market has con tinued extremely quiet throughout the fortnight and at the close practically nothing is doing. There is no go in freights, that several handy-sized boats ready very shortly here and at neighbouring ports are unable to secure any freight which would warrant their being moved. In fact, what little employment, bere is oforing is in nearly every instance at such low rates as to be scarcely enough to induce negotiations, The North reports that the coating trade is also almost at a standstil, and although there is plenty if produce in the faterior and at the main shipping centres, there seems to be little or no interest taken in the exchange of commodities owing to the tightness of money and the unsettled state of the country politically

From Saigon to this, demand for tonnage has been practically nil, and only a couple of fixtures have been reported at 14/15 cents per picul respectively, while the market closes weak without further enquiry at the moment. Just at the time of writing we hear of i small boat having accepted 12 cents per pical. Saigon reports under date of the 23rd May as follows: During the period under review rico prices have varied accord- ing to tenor of advices received from buying markets, chiefy from Hongkong and Sings poro. These having receded, the rice market closes dull with an easier tone helped by the downward tendency of silver

daring

Rice exports from Saigon from 1st January. to 20th May amount to 671,399 tous as compared with 459,452 tors corresponding period last year Quotation stands for June/July shipment at 84.03 per picul f.o.b. Saigon against: 84-71 for saING period last year,
