The decline and practical cessation of the missionary work of the Roman Church in China following the suppres sion by the Pops of the Order of Jesuits has been noticed above it was during this period of comparative inaction that the first missionary representative of the Reformed Churches came to China, The story of De Morrison's arrival in China in 1807 and of the difficulties and opposition he encountered is well known, but the causes that led to his mission to China possess an interest of their own, if only as providing a distinct link between the second forward movement of the Roman Church in China, and the inauguration of Protestant Missions, while at the same time it involves three of the great societies of England. The story has been related by Archdeacon Moulo: A Nonconformist Minister, Moseley
