HONGKONG, FOBRUARY 2ND, 1914.

ONE of the miracles of present day China is the way in which her foreign trade, as reflected by the revenue returns of the Maritime Customs, has thriven in the most inauspicious circumstances; revolution, political disturbances, and rebellion, so far from upsetting the course of trade, seem to have acted as a healthy tonic, and the revenue figures, instead of declining, have gone ahead by leaps and bounds. The revolutionary struggle at the end of 1911 kept several ports inactive during the whole of the last quarter of the year, yet the total revenus figures for the year constituted a record. Last it should be said that this was due solely to the increased opium dutice, 1912, another year of chaos and uncertain
