Nerve Strain --

Mr. B. C. HUCKS (the well-known Flying Man), of 5, Queen's Gate Terrace, London, England, writes: "I really must express my appreciation of Phosferine. Some time back felt myself in a curious state of nervous tension, brought on, no doubt, by the severe strain caused by flying under all sorts of weather conditions for the Daily Mail tour. I had an idea that my nerves were becoming shaken. I was advised to try Phosferine, and was quite astonished at the beneficial effect produced by even the first few doses. I am now feeling more 'fit' than ever and ready to start upon a season's flying that promises to be considerably more arduous than the last.”

No other medicine has received such absolute proof of its extraordinary properties in restoring Shattered Constitutions, and in giving back to the prematurely aged New Life and Energy.

FASHIONS AND FANCIES.

POCKETS

That pockets are once more in fashion, after an absence of many years, is one of the first boons that 1014 is bestowing upon. women. The smart position for them is immediately below the waist in front. This would seem very oddy only that for some months it has been modish to have the gown well puffed out not only round the hips, but even more between them in front. One may not have a pocket in the coat as well as in the gown. This would be too much of a heap, Those in the skirt are deep enough to cover the hands com pletely.

Even the waistcoat has its little side- pocket, ready for the reception of a powder puff, rather thiminutive, it is true, and a small, folding mirror. Is this the beginning of a merciful provision of receptacles for the handkerchief, the purse, a visiting card? Who can say There was a time when all these useful articles could be carried about one's person, and even & bunch of keys in addition. But it will not do to be too Banguine. When the novelty of the restored pocket wears off, Fashion may tire of the revival, and condemn us to carry bags, as we have been doing for the last ten years or more.

NÉVEST, TOQUES AND HATS,

Some of the new toques are brought" down so far over the right eye as to render. it almost upaless for the purpose to which it was designed, The wearer has to make- the most of the left organ of vision, for the curve of her toque hides most of the world from the other. When one-sided hats were worn some fifteen years ago, it was the left eye that was obscured. Now Fashion ordains that it shall be the right, as in the famous Gainsborongh Duchess of Devonshire.

Sometimes the whole of the right, side of the face is covered in by the smart het, while the left side of the herdgear rises. to a height of right inches in the air, its elevation further assisted by a palm- tree" feather, one with the fronds bound in closely with ribbon to within three inches of the top, where they spread out in a bench. Very few are seen without a plume of some sort, though there is a very neat and becoming toque with flat velvet crown and pleated brim, which has no other trimming than a hand of satin ribbon hiding the junction of crown and brim. Four-fifths of the new hats have no trimming whatever beyond a single feather.

THE EVENING COIFFURE,”

Meanwhile, the evening coiffure, not content with hiding the ears, encroaches on the cheeks in a fashion that threatens contiguity with the nose. The hair is all drawn upward and forward from the back, where it is gathered and folded over perfectly flat to the head. The bulk of it is arranged in high puffs on the crown, A small fringe is sometimes worn on the forehead, but this fashion is dis appearing.

SHIPPING STATISTICS.

AN INTERESTING MEMCHANDUM.

Some figures of much interest to ship owners are given in a memorandum pre- pared by Sir J. H. Biles and handed to the Dominions Royal Commission. Dealing with the question of size, Sir John Biles says that if unrestricted draught is attainable the large vessel will carry her cargo more economically than the small vessel, and therefore a small

FOR HOME WEAR, I

The

The latest garment for wearing at home partakes of the character of a jacket, u blouse, and a tunic Sometimes it is very short, especially at the sides, pointed Made of Lends, falling lower in front,

taffelas, crepe-de-chine, or charmeuse, abinetings of breché silk or velvet, they follow the open-neck fashion, as a rule, and are gecasionally trimmed with fur Very vivid colours are seen in these garments. Ia Paris they are called "vestes," a word that is applied equally to coats. Some have short sleeves, others long. One is in orange satin embroidered up the fronts, on the printed basques and on the cuffs in black and cream colour. Another is striped mandarin and deep brown velvet, with fur round the neck and forming deep cuffs.

This one is short-waisted and has a sash of black and white ribbon tied on one ride in a double bow, long ands falling over the gown. Yet another is in figured crêpe-de-chine. It forms a rather long tunic, and being of thinner material than the others described, is trimmed with a fine lawn collar and revers, both edged with a fue pleating of the same.

These jacket-blouses are convenient things to wear over any skirt.

THE POTCH.

The long, loose front known as the ponch has been making its way steadily to the front during the past few months, and now is firmly established in favour, It cannot be said to add to the grace of the figure, especially, when the wearer is very stout, but as it is again in fashion everyone will wear it Pyjama silk is mach used for blouses, sometimes with. stripes running perpendicularly, some times horizontally. The deep collar is turned back from the neck in front.

Some new models have high collars, as in one composed of double crêpe-de-chine and trimmed with lines of embroidery down the front, with faney buttons to match in colour. Blouses are following the fancy for Icose, ill-fitting garmen's, as shown in the outdoor coats of the moment, with gleeves much too wide for the arms and much irrelevant looseness about the body. The only attempt at fit is in the region of the ankles.-X. AND Z. in the Globe.
