Mr. Bruston alleged that the witness had been trained to give his evidence, and repeatedly asked that his questions should be answered in the direct affirmia- tive or negative. Mr. Brutton contended that be was quite entitled to stop & wit- ness from saying anything he was not asked. The interpreter was merely the mouthpiece of the witness. Eis Worship. would be redueing the cross-examination to a farce if he stopped him. Here was a man who had been in the position of being charged with the murder of the deceased man, who, they knew, was s prejudiced witness, and, in order to save his own neck, had turned King's evidence, and yet his Worship' would allow him to Tumble on and say what he liked.

Later in the cross-examination, Mr. Brutton said it was apparent that the witness must go through a certain formule. He had learnt his evidence like 208 a parrot.

The case was ultimately adjourned.
