THE KRUPT SCANDAL. :

A trial that has caused considerable sensation on account of the parties implicated was brought to a close fast week. It may be remembered that Herr Liebknecht, one of the Socialist lenders, informed the Reichstag: some time ago. that he had received an anonymous com munication accusing the well-known firm of Friedrich Krupp in Essen of bribery. and corruption in its dealings with the ordnance department and of the betrayal of military secrets. The matter was taken up at once by the military authorities as regarded the employees denounced, whilst the public prosecutor instituted proceed- ings against. Herr Brandt, Krupp's agent in Berlin, and againe Herr Ecclus, the | head of the apartment for tenders, elc., his immediate superior. It appears that Krupp's had noticed a falling off in their busings with the Governme-†, and attributing this to inadequate information had replaced their former agent, in the capital by Herr Brands, with instructions to find out what he could about offers and prices of competing firms, and to keep them posted. Taking advantage of having heo in the army himself, he locked up some of his old fellow non-coms, now employed with the rank of officer in the ordnance offices, and by menus of judicious treating, theatre tickets, small leans (which, however, in several instancs were repaid in due course) Christmas presents to the wives and children, etc.," managed to obtain from them and from others whose acquaintance he made through them valuable information as to prices and tenders, This was all the easier, as the firm of Krupp has always been supposed to enjoy the confidence of the Government to such an extent that the Jatter had no secrets from them (this as far as technical matters are concerned was admitted in the course of the trial), whilst the amounts disbursed by Herr Brandt were comparatively trifling and barely of a nature to arouse the suspicion of the recipients of his favours of being bribed. Newertheless they must have been aware that they were committing a serious breach of duty by furnishing the informa. tion they did, and they were consequently enteroor by the military tribunal to dismissal from their posts and terms of imprisonment varying from three to nine months. The second trial was of a much graver character, involving as it did the reputation of one of the largest firns in the country, one that had hitherto been looked upon as the very soul of integrity. Herr Brandt was charged with bribing subordinates in army offices, and with the

So far this year they had had to chettonaire from other companies for 124 voyages, which came rather expensive, That they had ordered two more vessels of the Imperator type was due to the fact that the Imperator had paid exceedingly well, and that passengers from the United States, who, as a rule, took return tickets, wished to make their voyage home in a bost like the one they liad come over in; this necessitated a weekly service which could not be carried on with less than three steamers of that class.
