Colonel John Hopton write thus to The Times:-Now that most of the im portant rifle meetings for the year aré over, and before the subject of rife shoot- ing once more retires into winter quarters, I shall be glad if you will allow me to draw attention. to the question of
sighting and socalled "practic shots which at present are plowed to immediately precede a competition at Bisley. It has been the custom to allow ono sighting shot at rifle-shooting matches and competitions-the notable exception being in the great Elcho Shield match, where they are not allowed. but at Bisley this year uo less than two "practice" shots (for a small payment), and one sigating shot could be taken immediately before com- peting, the sighting shot being allowed to coun for the store at the option of the competitor after he has fired the shot, Whether regarded from a sporting or from a war-training point of view. I think that the time has now come when this custom could well be dropped. lo no other sport wild such a thing be allowed; take cricket, for instance--the batsman's not given a trial ball, although the sportsman who has just gained for himself pair of spectacles in a match would doubtless have been glad if the rules had all wed one; nor is a sighting, shot allowed in the war-training compet tions. One reason for the retention of sighting shots that is usually brought forward is that they help the young shots and those who are strangers to the ranges in theory this may be the case. but in actual practice it will be found not to be so, for once the old shut has found the mark, he will always be able to "last" and to stick to that mark much better than the young and inexperienced shot.
It may be said that this question of "sighting and practice shots, is a technical me which can best be denit with by the Council of the National Rifle Association. But to this case a somewhat big principle is involved which requires strong backing to alter, and the Council, whose derisions very generally govern the rifle shooting world, are rightly chary of albering well-established Yules without having good grounds for doing so.
It is, of course, a reasonable contention tha men should have opportunities of testing the sighting of their rifles, atá a form of sixjetiny pool" could well be arranged at all distances for this purpose. Tu my opinion--and I write with the experiene of nach rifle, shooting behind- me-the time is now an opportune ore for making this drastic eliange-viz., to abolish at sighting" and "
practic shots in competitions.
1 look upon them as an expensive waste of ammunition, as unsportsmanlike, and as a relic of the dark ages of rifle shoot- ing. It is a good opportunity for the National Rifle Association Council, who will no doubt be soon making several changes in their competitions, rendered necessary by the course of time and cir- cunstances, and it is to be hoped that this abolition of sighting shots
may be one of thein.

HOTEL-KEEPER'S REVENGE ON HIS LAWYER.
A Bernese Swiss hotel-keeper, who had recently concluded a lawsuit lasting for years, and who received at the close exceedingly lengthy bill of costs, has just taken a neat revenge upon his lawyer. The bill of costs, it should be said, was paid without demur ou presentation.
