ENGLISH, SCOTCH, AND TRIBE:

A well-known Irish M.P., who shall be; nameless, recently told the folloring amusing story of a man who complained three friends an Englishmen, Scotchman, and sa Irishman that his sorvant was constantly breaking china. "What do you think I ought to do with ber" he asked plaintively. The practical Englishman, records the Tatler, said, "Dismiss her"; but as she was otherwise an excellent servant ber master was up- willing to do that. "Then take it out of hor: wages suggested the thrifty Boot.

That wouldn't do much good," was the reply, for her wages are less than the "Then amount of damage she does." raise her wages," said the Irishman promptly.

the cheapest grade, in which time is no crement, has become an economio necessity. Chinese funks, including some vessels: under foreign faga, are the only sailing vessels now seen in one of the reatest, parts of the world, and oven these are being affected by power vessels in the shape of the motor-driven launches and boats, which are commenting to take much of the river trade in South China away from them.

I was travelling sonth (writes a correspondent in the Glasgow News) by the East Coast route. At York my slumber was suddenly interrupted by a number of waiters, returning to London from sono function or another, who entered the compartment. During the rest of the journey they kept talk, talk, talking, so that I was unable to sleep. But from their conversation I received some compensation in the form of at least.

The following letter (says the Glasgow Weekly Herald) is from a small boy to his mother, who had sent him into the country to recover from an illness:---

Dear Mum, I forgot to write before Me and some other boys went out in a boat yesterday, and the boat turned over, but a man got me out alright. This morn ing we went out for a bike ride, and 1sailing ships declined to 288, or only 6,7 fell over and cut ine head. A LANCASHIRE HOST.

A little while ago, in a Lancashire town not far from Manchester, a clergyman was being entertained over the week-end by one of the well-to-do but plain men of the place. As soon as the guest was settled by the fireride on the Saturday evening, his host (says the fanchester Guardian) asked him, "Are you a teetotaller? Well, non, not exactly," was the reply. The master of the house received the statement with evident relief. *Ah'm reight glad to hear it," he said; "we'n had that sort stayin' with us afore. Now, if ye'd been one of them teetotallis yo'd 'a' been wantin' soda watter lemonade and lime-juice and ginger-ale, and nobody knows what all. But as yo a'nt a teetotaller yo'll be satisfied wi' plain watter, like the rest on us.”'.

LAUREATE AND LADY.

In its biography of the late Poet Laureato the Yorkshire Post recalls that it was at Rome that Mr. Austin met the wife of W. W. Story, the Americaa sculptor. This lady was bent, resolutely on his entertainment; but she had quits forgotten what her husband had told her 39 to his pursuits. In the course of con versation she tried him with Theology, then with the Drama. Finally she found "Pray," she inspiration in his name. said, are you a son of Miss Austin, the novelist ?"

He had attended his partner's wedding and at the reception he stepped gallantly forward to pay his respecte. I hardly foel like a stranger, he said-in his sweetest tones, addressing the bride. "In fact, I feel as though I ought to be well acquainted with my partner's wife, since he has so often done me the honour to read me extracts from his dear Susie's letters." The faces of the husband and the ваун the speaker were studies, Argonaut, us the bride drew herself up and said, emphatically and distinctly -- My name is I beg you pardon, sir. Helen.

The Suffragettes, though responsible for much wilful damage, aro doubtleg credited with more than they really deserve. Some schoolboys returning Home recently by rail were indulging, as boys' will, in wrestling and such like pranks in the railway carriage in which they were travelling, when one of them accidentally knocked his arm through the window of the door. Being financially "hard up," tbete was no question among them of owning up and paying the damage, and it would have been a risky matter to leave the window down, for it being a cold day, the first stranger to enter the carriage would want the window closed. At last anys, the Glasgow News, one bright youth hit on an ingenions solution of the difficulty Hle tore a leaf out of un exercise-book, printed on it in large letters Votes for Women," and then stuck it over the broken window that the Jadies might receive duo credit therefor.
