DEATH OF THE POET LAUREATE.

JOURNALIST, POET AND RECLUBE,

The news of the death of Mr. Alfred Austin, the Poet Laureate, was duly tole graphed by Router to Ceylon, and then seems to have been dropped from the service message, far it was only by the arrival of the southern papers that we became aware of the fact. The Times of Ceylon, in the course of its obituary. potion of the dead poet, essayist and leader writer, observes that he held the post of Poet Laureate for 17 years and passed away at the ripe age of 78. Many of those who know the late Laureate better than the world that, with or without justification, thought it fashionable to sneer at his pretensions to literary talent.

But his also were a warm heart end a sterling moral integrity. that made the Laureate's cloistered life one well worth the living. If the artistic value of the bulk of his poetry was negligible, and some of is is a good deal better than those who have never read it might imagine, Mr. Austin was not with out literary ability of another sort. is by no means generally known that in his early days he worked with success and credit as special correspondent in Rome for & great London daily paper. Some of his contributions in this capacity would compare very favourably with the works of the best modern descriptive journalists, and at the time they appeared created something of a sensation, not only in the

Homar Mullock of Bellair, King's County. The death of his father in 1801 made a con- siderable difference to the family finanses. and the fature Laureate was able to devote himself wholly and without fear to the activities whither bis natural beat had always inclined him, foreign travel and the making of verses. The bulk of his published work is largo, and although little known to the present generation, much of it found favour in the eyes of many of his fellow craftsmen of a genera- tion ago whose own cutpourings are still cherished.

SHIPBUILDING IN JAPAN.

WARSHIPS AND MERCHANT VESSELS.

Some information on the building of war and other ships in Japan appears in the Japanese papers from official quarters. The marked development in shipbuilding, as well as in the provision of naval Arsenals and other dockyards, is stated to be the result of the constant encourage. ment given by the Government for the construction of warships and other vessels at home, in order not only to económize expenditure but to ensure the indepen- dence of arms and ammunition which is importance from the of paramount strategical standpoint. The Imperial Navy has therefore decided to construct at home, besides the Puro and three other sisterships of 20,000 to 30,000 tons already built at Kure and Yokosuka, three battle ships of the same size, namely the Hiei, Haruna and Kirishima, the warships now building abroad being only the Hong and a few destroyers and submarine bouts.
