TRONDH'S FORMER OWNER.

MD, MACHIE'S RECOLLECTIONS OF PIONEER DAYS.

Mr. Grant Mackie, one, of the oldest residente in Malaya, was interviewed by a. Times of Malaya man the other day and had soms interesting things to relate con- cerning the pioneer days of the peninsula Questioned about the Tronoh Mines

said:

“Yes, is true that 1 once owned the whole of the Tronoh Mines at least I owned the land. I applied for the land in 1854 and Government gave it to ras, but I surrendered it because in those days no one bared for tin in this country deeper than 40 feet, and, as you know, the tin at Tronoh lies much deeper than this. The boring tools of these days, too. After I handed the were very erode.

Tronoh coession back to Government it was taken up by Chinese and, eventually, passed into Mr. Too Choo Choon's hands.

ex-

Mining at Tronoh, however, was not a success till Captain Addis, an perienced Australian miner came along and put down a deep shaft similar to those on the deep leads in Ballarat. Addis the struck the phenomenally rich tin leads which have occurred at Tronoh Tronoh was and sucross was basured. formed into a limited liability company in 1908 by Mr. E. G. Edgar, but all credit is due to John Addis, for had he not put down a deep shaft the land might have lain idle for many a long day."

that Mr. Mackie mentioned Mr. Douglas Osborne came to Kinta about IESD-1890 to take charge of the Leh Chin Kongsi's lin mine and later was interested with Mr. Pike, an ox-Inspector of Mines, in the now famous tin mine owned by Gopeng, Ltd. Mr. Piks became the first manager of this mine and when he died Mr. Osborne took over the management of it.

Vickers (Limited), Barrow-in-Furness, mounts eight 14in. breech-loading gaus in pairs in barbettes, two of these being for- ward and two aft, and so arranged that all cigh guns may fro on broadside, four firo ahead and four astern,

There are

also 16 din, breech-loading guns mounted behind armour in a citadel. The lighter armament includes eight din, guns.

The trials began on Wednesday, the At 14th, with the 3in. and Sin. guns daybreak the following day the trials of the 14in guns were proceded with The gun mountings, which are of the Vickers type, are hydraulically operated, but have secondary electric equipment, the control gear being of the Janney-Williams type, the first atted in a ship in this country. A programme of ten rounds per turret was arranged for at different degrees of elevation, and training to test the mount ings and the strength of the ship, and the meantings alike in precision and variable speed proved thoroughly satis factory. The trial concinded with a salvo from the starboard broadside of 18 guns, eight Min. guns and cight sin, guns, the collective weight of the projectiles exceed ing 8 tona. The trials were in every way

There was an unqualified success, evident whatever of strain to the ship's structure.

It is held locally that an incubated chicken is not such a good layer as one hatched by natural means, and moreover, which is more feasible, the young bird is not strong against disease and sickness. The mother bird in the period of sitting imparts to her offspring a reserve of the artificial method with all its economy strength, a fuller measure of life, which fails to supply.

LATEST STEAMER MOVEMENTS.

I learn from an official source that Sir John Jordan, the British Minister in Peking has been sittamoned home by Sir Edward Grey, in order that his Ex- celles may render at first hand to the Foreign Secretary an account of the present condition of affairs in China Upon his report very much will depend, as the Foreign Sceretary has been indis posed to yield to various representations made to him from divers quarters, religious as well as financial, regarding the future of the Chinese Republic until he ha had an opportunity to discuss matters fully with the British Minister in Peking. The situation there, as well as in other great centres in China, is con fused, and the accounts received here and such concering it are contradictory; East are involved in a pesceful and

Sore Throat?

Then Try Formamint.

Sore Throat is so common in this climate that never to suffer from it, even during the worst season of the year, would be an unique experience for most people. Yet this car casi! be accourished, is an emi- neat physician has proved.

"I have never had a Søre Throat myself since I be gan to use Formamint Tablets," he writes in the “Practitioner for Decen-

ber, 1907. "although I suffered periodically before."

Everyone who uses Formamint may enjoy the same immunity, not merely from Sore Throat, but als from Tonsillitis, and those grave infectious diseases like Diphtheria, Consumption, Scarlet Fever, Measles, Minips, etc., many of which invariably begin with Sore Throat.

All such diseases are contracted through inhaling gerns which A Forinamint Tablet, dis- breed rapidly in the math and throat. solved in the mouth; inst intly destroys these germs.

These claims are thoroughly en dorsed by the Medical Profession there are thousands of testimonial written in the same strain as the three quoted above; and amongst the most prominent users of Forma- mint are such celebrated people as

Harmint and worthless tablets, with maines very similar to Forma mint, are frequently offered for cale. Refise these firmly and insist on Wulfing's Foroamint, which is sold at all Chemists, in bottles of 50 fablets.

CHICKENS IN CHERIANG. INCUBATORS ON A LARGE SCALE.

A correspondent writing from Tai- chowia to the N.-C. Daily News says:

I was introduced a few days back to one of the Tintai chicken incubatories, which during the months of April, May and Juneare in full swing. The combination of simplicity and effectiveness is the most striking feature. A long dark but with earthenware butts ranged up and down. and long double shelves above complete the apparatus. What is not present is the thermometer. Four men and the pro- prietor make up the stoff. A gentle fire of oarcoal and ash is placed in the floor of each butt, a tray, full of eggs is placed within the mouth and covered with a closely fitting straw cap. At the end of six days each egg is examined by placing it in a circular hole in the panelling and the unimpregnated eggs are rejected. At
