In other words, hypocrisy, rather than pure and undefiled religion, would make the strongest appeal to Yuan and his Cabinet, and prompt

Alas, that such methods should be countenanced hy the followers of Christ, who was true as gold, and, if He were here, would first drive the Cabinet out and would then teach us to pray. The akill shown by the Peking Government may be compliment- ed, but the harm done to the cause of truo righteousness will take many long day to wipe out from this land. Oh, ye deluded people, "weep ye and howl," saith the prophet.
