CHINA'S DAY OF PRAYER.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, APRIL 1915, 1918.
On this subjort the China Republican of Shanghai writes:--
The Peking Government has again made a sensation. It has in good, ortho- dox style. after the fashion of the West, called a day of prayer. It should have added a "day of fasting and humilia. |tion." The call for prayer is primarily for the Christions, and different officials are cominanded to attend the services. All this of course will delight the heart of

they are intelligent enough to detect the “dodgs,” and spiritual enough to despise the hypocrisy.
For Yuan Shih-hai and his Cabinet to summon together the Christian communi- ties for purposes of prayer does not nocessarily mean that these officers of the Government believe in God, or in the officacy of prayer to God, except so far n them is created by this act a cortain impression in the minds of all who parti+ cipate, and still more on Christian Europe and America whose recognition the Government craves as speedily se possible. We have never before beard that the President or his Promier are religi- Qualy disposed or are even particular as to ethical distinctions, or that they love morey and hate iniquity. There can be no moral significance in the move, neither are these great men in Poking at all cop- viuced that the Christian Religion is the beet and must over more, be implicitly obeyed.
Be not decoived." The call for prayer is a political move. It shows the clever- nosa, not the religiousness, of Tuan Bhih- kai and his immediate followers. They will win the applause, the gratitudo and the confidence of Christian nations, as wall as of the growing Christian.com- munities in China. They will strengthen themselves in their
present position
through the support of foreign Powers. Their implication in the Sung Chiso-jen and other kindred connivances will now vanish under the conviction that they more than the Manchus are disposod towards Christianity. Quite probably Their recognition will be hastened, critics will be viewed as the reactionaries, and the Church will march in the path of progress and the ways of morey, under the leadership of Yuan Shih-kai, Tho Church has been captured for Yuan, not Yuan for the Church.
The Borrow of it all is that Christian people should be deluded, and that all these results, along with feelings of

Won to the Church that follows the book of Yuan Shih-kai along this downward grade! | The tempter, who came to Christ in the wilderness has come again, clad in another garb, but as tricky na ever.
It is to be lamented that perhaps the Church was implicated in setting the Cabinet to thinking and acting along these deceptive lines. In all probability. some Christian made the suggestion to Yuen Shih-kai, and in making the suggestion he made no appeal to con- science or urged repentance, but pointed out the chance to make an impression at a very needy hour. In other words, hypocrisy, rather than pure and undefiled religion, would make the strongest appeal to Yuan and his Cabinet, and prompt

On Bunday, April 27th, our officials will be expected to attend divine worship. If Christians stands, they will stard. If Christiane kneel, they will kneel. If prayers are read, they, too, will read the prayers. More cant and hypocrisy. Alas, that such methods should be countenanced hy the followers of Christ, who was true as gold, and, if He were here, would first drive the Cabinet out and would then teach us to pray. The akill shown by the Peking Government may be compliment- ed, but the harm done to the cause of truo righteousness will take many long day to wipe out from this land.
