Liverpool and New York with regard to the Asiatic trad. Before the Suez Canal was opched (1896) the route to Asia both from Liverpool and New York was vi the Cape of Good Hope. This gave thei former an advantage of 480 miles for Asiatic ports. When the Suez Canal was made, this advantage still more lengthened but do 1.024 miles. But now what will he the effect of the Panama Canal New York is brought at once vers: much nearor than Liverpool to Yokohama. New Yorki vi Pauma to Yokohama 9.835 miles. Liverpool ri Suez to Yokohama 11,040 miles. New York is nearer Vokolina by 1,805 miles and stands to gain very substantially in this respect. Thereforo, it is not difficult even to imagine the. commercial changes, and developments which may be expected from the opening of the Panama Canal. The canal itself is only a part of the vaster waterway scheme contemplated by the United States The perfecting of the of America. Panana Caon and the Lake Michigan Canal, the canalisation of the Illinois River and the perfecting of the channels of the Mississippi itself and larger tributaries, will furnish the backbone of the great conservation scheme. So that as far. transportation is concerned, steamers from Yokohama can load their fight at Dulath, Fort William, Toronto or Buffalo, and freight may be carried direct from the wharves of Mineapolis, Chicago, Pittsburg or Omaha to Yoko. hama. One of the immediate and striking effects of the canal will be to give morė advantage to Japan to develop her industries by cotton, iron and steel inports from the United States. A great · expansion of the silk industry in the United States is also certain to result from the shrinkage of space between "the grent Republic and Japan, the main some of the. raw material. Thus, with the opening of the canal, it will enter upon a new epoch of the political and economic history of the warld.

THE PREVENTION OF MALARIA.

Mr. T. Herbert Bindly writes to The Pimes :-"As the originator of the corres- pondence in The Times in April, 1808, calling attention to the value of the Barbadoes millions" as destroyers of mosquitoes, perhaps you will allow me to add to what appeared in your columns, po March 10 last that further investiga- tion quite bears out the belief that suit- able eyprinodont fishes will be found. wherever mouitoes alonud. Besides the Haplochilus species observed by Captain Sewall and Mr. Chandluri in india and Turma, a similar fisk, Haplochilus Graham, has been discovered by Dr. W. 6. Craliani, Director of the Medical: Research Institute, at lagos; and Dr. Andrew Balfour, of the Kaartam Labora- foris, has pointed out an indigenous little ash in the Sudan, Cyprinodon dispar, which feeds on acsquito larvae. The special value of the Girardinus povciloides, or Barbados millions," lies in their vigorous consumption not only of larvae but of the pup and of the mature female mosquito when laying her eggs on the water. I am told that the Paplochilus ens only for the larvae."
