THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, APRIL STA, 1918.
The Shanghai papers of Monday last devote many columns, to a descrip- tion of the great fire at Poctung, of which we published a telegraphic account on Monday last. We quote the following from the F.-C. Daily News report:-
The disastrous fire which occurred at the wharf and godowns of Messrs. Melchers & Co. at Postung on Saturday. night is probably the greatest ever experi enced here. In spectacular effect it is certainly without parallel; and at one period of the conflagration the whole of the shipping on that side of the river was enginngored while serious loss of life was only avoided by the narrowest of margins,
The outbreak originated at the roar part of a godown forming a huge block, and specially constructed for the storage of infarmable cargo. Stored away in the buildings was an immense quantity of paraffin wax. used in the manufacture of Price's candles, wood oil, hemp, grain, general cargo, and machinery packed in enses, Up to the time of the outbreak men are said to have been working in the gedown.
Immediately on the outbreak being detected, about 10.15 p.m., the alarin was given and assistance was eumonied from Shanghai. Those on the spot could do very little to prevent the fames getting a strong hold on the buildings, and, as events turned out, the whole of the avail- able fire-fighting force was practically helpless in the face of the alarming dimensions which, the ontbreak soon as.. sumed.
BRIGADES TO THE RESCUE,
At the earliest possible moment, No. 4 company of the Shanghai Fire Brigade, under Chief Officer Pett. the River Police fire font, directed by Inspector Mellows. the Municipal and Customs fire floats, the Harbour Master, Capt. Myhre, being on the latter, were at work, and from the Srst it was scon that efforts would have to by concentrated on doing everything possible to prevent the fire spreading. The godowns were burning firecoly and Bending out streams of molton wax and oil, two or three inches deep. Gathering force every second, the fire developed into a tremendous blaze, and hind not the direction of the wind be towards the river nothing could have pre vented the large buildings on one side or the other becoming hopelessly involved Eating their way towards the front of the buildings, the flames worked complete destruction, and the position of the mru who were endeavouring to check them was rendered most hazardous by the masses of burning oil and allow which began to drift down towards the bridge connected with the jetty.
