LONDON AMUSEMENTS.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 1818.

JEKOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

LONDON, Feb. 17th,

During the past. two weeks there have been several new productions, but whether they will remain long as great attractions is a query and time will show.

At the Haymarket Henrik Ibsen's' historical play, The Preinders, produced by Mr. Frederick Harrison, is a great show, lavishly put on and splendidly acted. Mr. Laurence Irving, who portrays the Earl Skule, a vacillating individual, is strong and impressive, and Bliss Notta Westcott as Hakon's bride, Margrete, s a very fine impersonation. As Inga, Miss Yvonto Orchardton looks and acts well. To Mr. Basil Gill must be given great praise for his picturesque representation of the brave Hakon.. The plot is that Hakon and Skule, who are not really pretenders, are both of royal blood and wage war upon each other with varying. fortunes all through the piece. For a considerablo time they are pushed on by the crafty Bishop of Oslo, presumably for the benefit of Mother Church. The protracted death of the aged Bishop forips the most striking episode in the play, Mr. Norman O'Neill is responsible for the incidental music, with the exception. of a plain chant in the Requiem.

subject of almost national interest by Mr. Stanley Hough- ton. The chief character is John Green- wood (a great part played by Mr. Arthur Bourchier), Minister of Labour, who has compromised himself with the wife of Captain Felton, a blackmaller, before becoming engaged to a young widow, Lady Violet Aindio (Miss Viva Birkett). Lord Eccles (Mr. Thomas Noquelin), an Browed cynic and a member of the Government, asks what he is going to do in view of threatened divorce proceedings, Greenwood replies, "Trust the people' But this idea is very little to the taste of Lady Violet's father, Lord Cheadle (Mr. Kenyon Musgrave), and Lady Violet seems rather afraid of having to face the music, su Greenwood breaks off the engagement, and then has a scene with Sir James Macpherson (Mr. Herbert Bunston), the Prime Minister, and Mr. Morris Johns, the Chief Whip, at which Sir James is an Lord Eccles assists. opportunist, whose mind is set upon a luncheon he is giving to a Bulgarian dancer. To the horror of the picus Johns he suggests that the businesslike Captain Felton should be "squared" out of the

of confidence, Lord Cheadle induces his son, Lord Richard, to oppose Greenwood, and also instigates his daughter to speak against him with success, and Greenwood loses by a narrow majority, At the declaration of the poll Greenwood

denouneca as hypocrites the people he has hitherto trusted and in a hasty moment says he bus consed to believe ia the courage or faith of women. In the third act we are in the typical Lancashire Jack's home of Greenwood's parents, father, who has voted against him, is obdurate, but when the repentant soh returns home he has to give way to his homely old wife's love of her lad. Lord! Eccles, who is a good-hearted fellow, offers the ex-Minister an editor's chair ሲያ a new weekly paper, and more important to him is Lady Violet coming to say she wants him to marry her. Meanwhile her scheming father has given himself away as the sender of a telegram that caused her to doubt her true lover. The piece has evidently found favour, as large houses are attending to witness a pretty play and some fine acting.

Eliza Comes to Stay is the title of Mr. H. V. Esmond's three-act piece produced at the Criterion, and containe farce, comedy and sentiment.

The author's idea is a supposed child being left to the tender care of a young bachelor. Sandy Verrail (Mr. R. V. Osmond) is engaged to Vers. Laurence (Miss Diana Portis), an actress, and tries to obtain for her a suitable play and gets his manservant and one Montague Jordon to read some plays that are sent in. Eliza (an ideal representative in Miss Eva Moore) is thechild legacy" and is a grown-up young woman, and Sandy promises to look after and cherish her.

A rovel turn is given to events when Jordon advisas Elim to try to make herself beautiful Fer first crude attempt is amusing and unsuccessful, but later she comes out in her true colours and is perfectly charming, In the

How they Cure and Prevent St,

Everyone who suffers fromTM Sore Throat should test the wonderful remedy and preventive which is used by the Right Hon. Arthur J. Balfour (1), Sir Gilbert Parker (2), and other famous M.P.'s, as well as by. great lawyers like Lord Justice Buckley, celebrated singers like Madame Adelina Pátti (7), and lead- ing actors like Mr. H. B. Irving (8).

Who could ask for more convincing and trustworthy witnesses? They are, more- over, particularly prone to catch Sore Throat because they are often in hot crowded places where the germs, which .cause Sure Throat abound.

Wulfing's Formamint the remedy which they and hundreds of their col- leagues all rely upon-kills these germs in the mouth and throat. That is why it is prescribed by over 7,000 medical mea for curing and preventing Sore Throat.
