AN EFFECTIVE VACUUM PUMP.
The novel kind of pump developed by W. Gaede, a German physicist, produces high vacua in a manner different from the piston rotating, oil and mercury pumps hitherto used, and is said to yield higher vacua than any other pump, to operate more rapidly, and to remove vapour and air together. At each revolu tion it sucks out a portion of the air. 4 which is ent off from the rest. cylinder rotating in a close-fitting casing has cut into a number of grooves, each closed for a portion of the diameter by a projection, and at each revolution a portion of the air is received at a certain A small discharged at another point. This is the famous remedy that carried along in the grooves, and nozzle projecting from tas casing fits an has given new strength to so many auxiliary pump, and a larger pipe is invalids, so many debilitated, ner-attached to the vessel from which the air is to be exhausted. Pumups tested vous men, so many weak suffering have been driven at 8,000 revolutions per minute, and have made as complete a women, so many anaemic, languid vacuum in 10 seconds us had been obtain ed in 100 seconds with a mercary pump girls and youths.
As this apparatus-styled a molecular partial Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale Pump-is effective only in n

ELECTRIC NERVE-SOOTHING. Electric sleep is to be the great boor. of nerve-disordered humanity if the expectations of Dr. F. Nagelschmidt, of the Berlin Finsen Institute, are realized. Some years ago Dr. Ledne produced sleep in animals by applying continuoua electric currents to the base of the brain, but the currents necessary were near the danger point, and the claim of Dr. Nagelschmidt is an improved method using a special alternating current giving even nearly approaching the limit of safety. It appears that not only can the number of volts, milliamperes and alternations be fixed as needed but that the time the current will flow can be predetermined as well. Unconsciousness is produced quickly, awakening follows in minute or two after the current ceases, and the alternating current not only elieves insomnia, but it has other useful effects speedily overcoming neuralgie pains, and giving particularly a harm less means of controlling the violent The insane without the strait-jacket. electric sleep can be deepened so as to give painless execution of criminals or slaugh- toring of animals.

CHILDHOOD'S MENACE,
The new views of tuberculosis were dealt with by Prof. Nictner, of Berlin, at the late opening of a new medical school in London. It now appears that the disease is chiefly contracted very early in life, and one authority has declared that 90 per cent, of all children under 13 are infected. As it is a disease of home, not of school, prevention is largely a complex social problem.
