PISCATAQUA.

An-enthusiastic audience gathered-im-- the Happy Valley ground to witness the U.S.S. in football team (sustain their first defeat, it being administered by the Grays of the U.S.S. Wilmington. The game commenced at 2.30 p.m., the gridiron being cleared.for the battle by Referee Wallace and Umpire Jennings, with the Piscataque having the kick-off, the. ball being, recovered quickly, and a good gain made before being down. In the scrimmages, following the Grays, unable to ninku galu, tried their forward pass, but without success. The ball went to the Pixente, who worked their criss-cross

but here Brunibaugh, of the Grays, grew watchful and with speed and precision frustrated their further efforts and the ball want weer to thy Grays! They work- ed their forward pom with great success, and, as the goal was teared, the ball was vetered dough, we, with great speed and clever avoidance of Piscatayna's left end and full back, carried the ball over the goal for the first touchdown, after cleven minutes of hard playing.

amid the Frantic cheers of the myton rooters and the vociferating yelps of and Spot who, arrayed in Nellie" their regalia, were the two mascots of the Wilmington. In the remainder of the half the Piscataqua came near scor- ing, they having again rung in their oriss- cross play, using it to good advantage; but here Brurabangh's breaking of inter- ferences, and tackling, saved the score being tied, and, upon the ball going over to the Grays, was given to Marsh, who male a 25 yard right end run, but before the ball could be snapped again the referee called time and the first half ended, the score being 0 to 0 in favour of the Grays,

The second half was marked by much back and forth playing... A forward pasa to Marsh, a 26 yard left end run by Caples, and a 25 yard right end run by Brumbaugh followed by his brilliant-line plunges carried the oval sphère deep in Piscatajne territory, but here they braced up, and with the aid of a 15 yard penalty inflicted upon the Grays for Interfering with a free catch the required 10 yards was not made and the ball went over to the Piscataqua. Another penalty inflicted on the Grays followed by a succession of centre rushes carried the ball so close to the Grays goal that only inches lacked for a touchdown, but desperate defence work kept the ball from going over the line, and the Grave taking it, placed along punt which by fast work was recovered: This seemed a stimulus, for with forward passes, centro rushes, and runs and line planges the ball was quickly brought within three yards of Piscataque goal; a fumble gave the ball to the Parataquer, and they, as a last resort. tried for a punt, but bere Holmes,' made a sensational catch and carried the ball back again to the 3-yard linu Io the centre rash that followed Bruinbaugh hurtled himself through the writhing mass and barely made the second touchdown, making the score 12-to-0 In the part of the half following the Pirataque made

Mighty Mayfair. By Conon. Bondos fat John Long & Co. The relations of Mighty. Mayfair a cleverly presented by a writer who tes a forceful per. The pictures are almost photographic in their accuracy, but most of them are unattractive, a fenture which londs perhaps a certain spice to the bool. The writer ought to be able to produco something of a more healthful character and achieve a greater success than is at tained in the fark under notice Mighty Mayfair is undoubtedly clever, one might say brilliant, but the theme does not end itself to heroics.

In this second work by the same author a story with more vigorous movement is exceedingly well told. It conger the struggle for possession of a manor and estato in Englanit by an Australian girl, who is at on feposter, and the real heir.. Both rong, virile ersonalities, passionate ad-primeral in their instincts, and tho dramatic element is not lacking in their Tarious "oncounters. As is perhaps to be expected, the struggle provas that the two strong personalities are affinities, and so lends happily with the interesting pair.
