HEALTH HINTS TO CITY MEN.
ADVOUATES OF LIGHT HID-DAY MEALS.
If the City man wishes to be healthy he must avoid a heavy meal in the middle of the day.
INTIMATION
"A MACHINE A MINUTE."
The week just closed, as this issue goes to press, has been epoch-making in the annals
On that one point, says a of the Writing Machine. A great milestone has been reached and pissed in the history of the London paper, the experts of the Institute of Hygiene, who met in conference at the Guildhall to discuss the health of those who bury themselves daily in the one square mile, agreed.
The Lord Mayor drew on his experience of nearly sixty years of the City to point out how many fevers which were formerly common have disappeared. Typhus was now never met with, and enteric had largely been conquered. The City office accommodation had practically been re- built, and he was not aware that the City worker was at & greater disadvantage in his work than the worker in the outlying districts of the Metropolia.
THE IDEAL MENU.
Dr. Olsen, of Caterham, discussed the question of the City man's luncheon, and suggested as an ideal menu :-----
Poached egg on toast.
A glass of milk.
Bread and butter.
Fresh or stewed fruit.
An alternative could be found in nuts, which were not appreciated half as much as they should be

WHISKY AND EXERCISE
"Much of the business man's illness is. due to whisky drinking," said Dr. Farqu bar Buzzard. The medical profession were largely responsible for the fallacy that whisky was the safest thing."......
Dr. Buzzard also spoke against exces- sive exercise. What a man required after a day's mental work was some form of recreation which involved the taking of fresh air and did not involve a great loss of nervous energy. A man's health bad no relation to the size of his muscles.
Mr. Lewis R, S, Tomlin introduced the following interesting motto for good health:
Early to hed, carly to rise.
Never get drunk and advertise,
He explained, however, that the last word was introduced for the sake of the rhyme.
SIX RULES OF HEALTH.
Six rules of health for the business man submitted by Dr. Strickland Goodall, lecturer on physiology at the Middlesex Hospital, were as follows:-
Pay a periodical visit to the dentist. Let the chief meals of the day be the morning and evening meals, and not the midday meal.
Devote at least one hour to each of
your meats.
Avoid all business discussions, read. ing, games, etc,, during meals.
Avoid fads in food.
Exhibit moderation in all things dictctical.
Sir Wm. Bennett closed the discussion with a reference to the "nonsense that was talked about exercise." He beliored more people were killed by exercise than for the want of it; personally he took as little exercise as he could because such It was a condition agreed with him. entirely a matter of temperament,
In Sir William's opinion,. if people would cat before they began to work and after they had finished, abstain from drinking between meals, and always eat in moderation, the general health would be vastly better.
BEETHOVEN'S LAST CONCERT.
SEX AUDITORS PRESENT IN A PRAGANT'S HUT.
Towards the end of his life, Beethoven was taking the eure at Baden, when he was suddenly seized with a desire, says the Colonische Volkszeitung, to pay a visit to his nephew, then living in Vienna.
Teat
He set off one morning, with the inten tion of covering most of the distance on foot, but became so exhausted before nightfall that he stuppe at a humble cottage and asked permission to there. Leave was granted willingly, and, in hospitable fashion, the owner made him sit down, have some dinner, and after dinner occupy the old family armchair in the chimney-corner.
While the women, assisted by her doughter, was clearing away the dinner things, the man opened an old piano, his three sons took down some musical instru- ments hanging against the wall, and the four of them proceeded to play, and put such an intensity of feeling into their playing that the women stopped their work and listened.
Beethoven, deaf us he was then, did not bear a single note, but the striking ex- pression on their faces, and the dash and precision of their execution," interested
