Unsold stock is estimated at about 2,101 chests, comprising 195 chests of Patna New, 1,426 chests of Patna Old, 230 chests of Benares New, and 310 chests of Bonares Old. Sold bat uncleared stock:-33 chests of Patza New, 721 chests of Patna Old, 112 chests of Bonares New, and 83 chests of Bonares Old- in all about 949 chests. Market closes quiet. MALWA OPIUM--Market, quiet. Sales are reported in Old of about 17 chests at $2,025, and to $2,030 per picul. Clearances, about 92 cheats. Unsold stock, about 806 cbestu. Uncleared stock, about 212 chests. Slip- ments, about 166 clrests. Closing quotations for New, $2,900 to $2,000 to $2,925; Old, $42,025 to 82,950.

COTTON.-Now-sea-ou-erap-arrived here, and the importers ar unwilling to part at lower prices offered by the Chinese pur- chasers. No reliable prices can be quoted. Stock about 300 hales.

SILK CULTURE IN THE PHILIPPINES.

Mr. W. A. V. Wiren who has been in charge of the Batac silk farm of the Bureau of Education in Ilocos Norto for the last four years, has resigned from the Bureau of Education to take over his private interests on the Dungon planta- tion where he intends to promote silk Mr. eo culture on a commercial basis. 85 Wiren, says the Manila Times, is the fore- 85,02 most authority on silk culture in the 2384 Philippines, having studied the work in 161, 16 Japan, and experimented with the Ceylon 13 silk worm in the Philippines for the last
